After a season opener that delivered some stirring battles, flared tempers and a familiar ending, the Monster Energy Supercross circuit will head to Oakland for Round 2 (Saturday, 10 p.m. ET, USA).

Ken Roczen won the Jan. 8 season opener for the fourth time in Anaheim, besting defending series champion Cooper Webb. Justin Barcia finished third, followed by Mavin Musquin and Chase Sexton, Roczen’s Honda teammate who rebounded from two crashes.

Musquin also provided some fireworks after a dust-up with Malcolm Stewart led to a postrace altercation.

Those storylines, plus Christian Craig’s winning start in 250, set the table nicely for Saturday night’s Supercross return to Oakland as Round 2 will mark the circuit’s first time there since Feb. 1, 2020.

Leigh Diffey and Todd Harris will handle play-by-play duties for Supercross coverage in 2022 with five-time Supercross champion Ricky Carmichael returning as an analyst. Daniel Blair and Will Christien will serve as pit reporters, with Blair also assuming the duties of play-by-play commentator in select events.

When do the Olympics start? Opening ceremony date, time, schedule for 2022 Winter Games

The 2022 Beijing Olympics are nearly here. And, like all previous iterations, it will officially begin with the opening ceremony, complete with pomp, pageantry and parade of nations.

Adding to the excitement of this year’s Winter Games is the fact the opening ceremony will be headed by Zhang Yimou, the director responsible for creating the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing — generally considered one of the best opening ceremonies in Olympic history.

This year’s edition, however, will feature some notable differences, not only from more recent ceremonies, but also to the one Zhang directed in 2008. It will be considerably shorter than the 2008 ceremony, featuring roughly 3,000 artists — compared to 15,000 from 2008 — because of the cold weather and COVID-19 pandemic. It will feature three major themes: those of world peace, the Olympic motto and Beijing 2022’s “together for a shared future.”

Because the program will be on a smaller scale in 2022, Zhang will use improved technology to make the opening ceremony “ethereal and romantic,” per Chinese state media. Zhang has also promised the Olympic flame will be lit in an “unprecedented in the over 100-year history of the Olympic Games.”

“It’s a great honor to direct the opening ceremony for the second time,” Zhang said. “I hope to make a good impression and create some wonderful moments that will go down in history.”

When do the Olympics start in 2022?

The 2022 Olympic Games will begin with the opening ceremony on Friday at 7:30 p.m. China Standard Time (or 6:30 a.m. Eastern Time). For those who don’t want to wake up to watch the event as it happens live, NBC will provide a special presentation of the opening ceremony from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., featuring special coverage of Team USA alongside the performances and parade of nations.

How to watch the opening ceremony in USA

NBC will carry live coverage of the opening ceremony and all other Olympic events through its family of networks. The main network, NBC, will host the opening ceremonies. There are plenty of streaming options for Olympics fans as well. Peacock is NBC’s free streaming platform and will be carrying coverage of the opening ceremonies. NBCOlympics.com will be as well. FuboTV, which offers a free trial, is also a streaming option for these events.

How long is the Olympics opening ceremony?

Zhang has said this year’s Olympics opening ceremony will be less than 100 minutes long — roughly an hour and a half — as opposed to the ceremony he directed in 2008, which ran roughly four hours.

Where are the 2022 Olympics?

The 2022 Olympics will be held in Beijing, which was awarded the bid by the International Olympic Committee at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2015. The final operating budget for this year’s Olympics is listed at $3.9 billion (though it should be noted many of the events will take place at China’s Beijing National Stadium, which itself cost $428 million to construct).

Beijing is 13 hours ahead of Eastern Time, meaning many events will be tape-delayed for prime-time audiences in the United States.

The 2022 Olympics will include a record-109 events across seven umbrella sports: biathlon, bobsledding, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating and skiing. Below are the venues for the 2022 Olympics, plus the accompanying events for each:

NBC traditionally broadcasted the first two games of the wild-card weekend when the NFL had 12 playoff teams. The network still gets two games in the opening weekend under the expanded format but now those games will fall on different days. Saturday’s contest features the Las Vegas Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals, while the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs face off Sunday.

The Raiders and Bengals met earlier in the season, with Cincinnati winning 32-13. Joe Mixon ran wild in this game, something Las Vegas will try to prevent. Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase are operating a high level right now, but don’t dismiss Tee Higgins in this game. The Raiders have Darren Waller back and are coming in on a winning streak, so they’ll feel confident based on their recent play. The Bengals do have a history of falling flat in the playoffs.

The Chiefs handily defeated the Steelers in the regular season and got good news on the injury front with Tyreek Hill and Clyde Edwards-Helaire set to play Sunday. Kansas City hasn’t lost to a non-Tom Brady team in the last three years in meaningful games, so this is a tough task for the Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement tour continues for at least one more week as the team got into the playoffs in a wild Week 18. Can the veteran pull off another upset despite a serious decline in skills over the last few seasons?

The Bengals (10-7) will host the Raiders (10-7) in the NFL Wild Card round on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised by NBC.

Cincinnati, which won the AFC North for the first time since 2015, is also making its first playoff appearance since it won the division title. The Bengals closed the season with a 5-3 record including a three-game winning streak against the Broncos, Ravens and Chiefs before their Week 18 loss against the Browns.

Cincinnati’s offense was one of the best in the league this season, ranking seventh in scoring (27.1 points per game). Second-year quarterback Joe Burrow threw for the sixth-most passing yards (4,611) in the league along with 34 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, while rookie wideout Ja’Marr Chase had a terrific season with 1,455 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns.

Las Vegas is making its first playoff appearance since 2016, when it was then-known as the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders went 7-5 under coach Rich Bisaccia after former coach Jon Gruden was fired this season, closing the year with a four-game winning streak against the Browns, Broncos, Colts and Chargers.

Las Vegas had three players named to the Pro Bowl this season: defensive end Maxx Crosby; linebacker Denzel Perryman; and punter AJ Cole. Perryman was tied for third in the league with 102 solo tackles and also had three pass deflections and two fumble recoveries.

This will be the second meeting between the Bengals and the Raiders this season. Cincinnati won the first contest, 32-13, on Nov. 21 at Las Vegas.

NBCUniversal will present a Winter Olympics-record 2,800+ hours of coverage across NBC, Peacock, USA Network, CNBC, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app when the XXIV Olympic Winter Games from Beijing, China, begin this February.

In a Winter Olympics first, but similar to its coverage of the Tokyo Olympics, NBCU will provide full-day coverage of the Opening Ceremony on Friday. Feb. 4, on NBC and Peacock. The day will include live coverage in the morning followed by a special edition of TODAY, an afternoon Olympics preview show, and an enhanced primetime presentation of the Opening Ceremony, with a special focus on Team USA.

As with recent Winter Olympics, the NBC broadcast network will feature 18 nights of primetime coverage, beginning on Thursday, Feb. 3, the night before the Opening Ceremony. USA Network, the new home for many of NBC Sports’ biggest events, will be the cable home of the Winter Games, providing coverage from Feb. 2-20. And, as previously announced, Peacock will live stream all Winter Olympics coverage on its premium tier and immediately host replays of all competition to ensure fans won’t miss a moment.

“These Games have provided some unprecedented challenges, but by having already produced the Tokyo Olympics amidst the pandemic, we’re fully prepared and equally excited to bring all the memorable moments of the Winter Games and Team USA to American viewers this February,” says Pete Bevacqua, Chairman, NBC Sports. “In addition to the extensive coverage on broadcast and cable television, every single moment of the Winter Games from Beijing will be available to viewers on Peacock’s premium tier for the first time, providing yet another avenue for viewers to consume the Olympics. NBCUniversal is presenting its 18th Olympic Games, 12th consecutive overall, and sixth straight Winter Games, all the most by any U.S. media company.

Following are highlights of NBCU’s presentation of the 2022 Beijing Olympics (Note: Similar to Tokyo, Beijing is 13 hours ahead of the U.S. eastern time zone, allowing for significant coverage of live events in the primetime and Primetime Plus shows):

Opening Ceremony

Identical to this past summer’s Tokyo Olympics and in a first for a Winter Games, NBCUniversal will provide unprecedented full-day coverage of the Opening Ceremony on Friday. Feb. 4. Coverage begins at 6:30 a.m. ET on NBC and Peacock with NBCU’s first-ever live morning presentation of a Winter Games Opening Ceremony.

Following live coverage, a special edition of TODAY will air on NBC from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. ET, including reaction to the Opening Ceremony and athlete interviews.

From 12-3 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, NBCU will review the highlights of the Opening Ceremony and look ahead to the biggest storylines of the Beijing Olympics with its first-ever daytime show on the opening Friday of a Winter Games.

The day-long coverage will culminate with an enhanced primetime presentation of the Opening Ceremony, from 8-11 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, with a special focus on the athletes of Team USA in addition to the traditional performances, pageantry and Parade of Nations that make the Opening Ceremony one of the most-watched events worldwide.

NBC

The NBC broadcast network will televise nearly 200 hours of coverage, including 18 nights in primetime. The primetime presentation will again be televised live across the country, featuring all the Games’ most high-profile sports, including figure skating, alpine skiing, snowboarding, short track, speed skating, and more.

For the second consecutive Winter Games and third overall, NBC will broadcast its primetime Olympic show live across all time zones. Primetime begins each night at 8 p.m. ET, except for Sundays (7 p.m. ET).

Like Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018, primetime coverage on NBC begins the night before the Opening Ceremony, on Thursday, Feb. 3, featuring live figure skating as well as qualifying for men’s and women’s moguls. In figure skating, Team USA begins its pursuit of a third straight medal in the Team Event, which could include the Beijing debut of Nathan Chen.

Primetime Plus, which debuted for PyeongChang and was duplicated for Tokyo, returns for Beijing. The program follows late local news in most time zones and will feature significant live coverage of many of the Games’ most high-profile sports, including figure skating, alpine skiing, snowboarding, short track, and speed skating. Like the primetime show, it will be live across the country in all time zones.

On Sunday, Feb. 13, the Beijing Olympics will both precede and follow NBC Sports’ coverage of Super Bowl LVI on NBC and Peacock. Programming from Beijing will begin at 8 a.m. ET and continue until Super Bowl pre-game coverage begins at Noon ET. Following post-game coverage, the Winter Olympics resume, including live figure skating and bobsled among other sports.

Peacock

As previously announced, Peacock will be the streaming home of the Winter Olympics, offering fans the ability to live stream all 2,800+ hours of NBCUniversal’s coverage of the XXIV Olympic Winter Games on the service’s premium tier from February 2-20.

Peacock will present live streaming coverage of every event of the Winter Olympics — inclusive of all events airing on broadcast and cable television — providing fans with a comprehensive Olympics destination for all live action and catch-up on-demand viewing. Olympic Ice (10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. ET) will be essential viewing for figure skating fans, featuring in-depth analysis of one of the Winter Games’ most popular events, including competition highlights, interviews with Team USA athletes, practice reports and scoring breakdowns Winter Gold (11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. ET) will provide a comprehensive look at the most compelling performances of the day so that fans never miss a minute of action. Top Highlights (8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. ET) will give fans even more memorable moments and highlights throughout the day.

Cable Networks

USA Network, the platform that now hosts many of NBC Sports’ most high-profile events, will be the cable home of the Winter Olympics, televising nearly 400 hours across 19 days and nights.

Over the course of the Games, USA Network will feature all 15 sports in the Winter Olympics program and many live medal events. Most days the channel will feature round-the-clock Olympic coverage.

NBCU’s coverage of the Beijing Olympics begins two nights before the Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, Feb. 2, when USA Network televises live curling featuring Team USA; live coverage of women’s ice hockey between Canada and Switzerland; and training for the men’s downhill.

On Sunday, Feb. 13, USA Network will have Olympics coverage throughout the day and night while NBC broadcasts Super Bowl LVI.

This will be the ninth time USA Network has carried Olympic programming (2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020).

CNBC, NBCU’s widely distributed business channel, will present roughly 80 hours of Winter Olympics’ coverage, mostly in the evenings when the network’s traditional business coverage has finished for the day.

Programming on CNBC will primarily feature curling and ice hockey.

This will be the 12th consecutive Olympics in which CNBC has provided coverage, every Summer and Winter Games since 2000.

Authenticated Streaming

NBCOlympics.com and NBC Sports app will live stream 2,100+ hours from Beijing, a record for a Winter Olympics.

Digital coverage will include live streaming of all events and competition across desktops, mobile devices, tablets, and connected TVs for authenticated users; TV simul-stream coverage of the three television networks broadcasting the Games; and an enhanced viewing experiences for select sports.

In addition, fans will be able to access live streams of practices and an active news desk that will regularly publish Olympic updates throughout each day.
