A West Elm Furniture Designer Is Going Viral on TikTok—But Not for His Designs

At House Beautiful, we believe that certain home brands are synonymous with chic interior design—one of them being West Elm, the beloved modern retailer owned by Fortune 500 company Williams-Sonoma, Inc. But the latest talk of the town on TikTok is earning the company press for a different reason—er, person. Meet “West Elm Caleb.”

I have stumbled upon West Elm Caleb tiktok and how had this man dated every girl in NYC…ISN’T HE TIRED pic.twitter.com/VnpE1v0kLx — Rav 💜 (@trixer132) January 19, 2022

The 25-year-old West Elm furniture designer by the name of Caleb Hunter has caused quite the online fracas…though not for anything related to interior design. Instead, Hunter has garnered a reputation for being something of a havoc-wreaking playboy—namely, sending replica texts, renaming Spotify playlists to make it appear as if they were made exclusively for one person, and dropping off the face of the earth after weeks of consistent communication—on countless 20-something-year-old women using dating apps in New York City. At the time of writing, there are a combined total of more than 2.1 million views on TikTok videos with the hashtag #WestElmCaleb and countless tweets—one in which Caleb is deemed the “working woman’s Pete Davidson.”

Of course, it’s not uncommon to be led on by an overly-confident guy (there’s a reason why Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 u” was such a hit, after all!), but, the John Tucker Must Die-vibes of this particular man being exposed in real time on TikTok make for quite the social media entertainment.

u want me to date??? a man??? in nyc????? what if he’s the next west elm caleb I can’t deal with that — insider irene (@enerianna) January 19, 2022

Now, you may wonder, why bring Caleb’s job into this? Well, because according to many accounts, it does seem like he plays up his job for bonus points amongst his many dating app matches (one TikTok user claims he brought up his job completely unprompted). While it’s highly unlikely that Caleb is the next Charles Eames or Warren Platner, we can’t blame a guy for trying.

In another TikTok video, a screenshot of Caleb’s Hinge profile shows that one of his prompts made it clear that he is not giving out discounts on West Elm furniture (a girl can dream!). Fortunately, though, is currently having a sale of up to 40% off ready-to-ship furniture and up to 20% off in-stock best sellers—and you can shop our favorite picks below.

While one TikTok commentator speculates that this is all just a marketing ploy set up by West Elm, we couldn’t help but wonder: In a sea of West Elm Calebs, where is our Aidan?

TMI Takeaways: Caleb Houstan, Hunter Dickinson star in Michigan’s 83-64 rout of Maryland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan’s struggles this season came to a halt, if only for one night, as U-M defeated Maryland 80-64.

Hunter Dickinson led Michigan with 21 points, while freshman wing Caleb Houstan added 16 points, including thee 3-pointers.

Eric Ayala led Maryland with 22 points.

For more on the game details, here are The Michigan Insider’s key takeaways from U-M’s victory.

Caleb Houstan Shines

Coming into the season, former five-star Caleb Houstan was expected to be one of Michigan’s top shooters as a freshman. Through 14 games, he’s been up and down and hasn’t looked like the preseason All-Big Ten player as voted on by the media. This evening, however, Houstan looked like a poised player for Michigan. He started off 5-of-5, including two 3-pointers. He also showed the ability to get to the basket, and connected on a nice and-1 near the end of the first half. Overall, he would finish with 16 points, including 3-of-4 form 3s and most importantly looked like a confident shooter that Michigan will need to make a possible NCAA Tournament run.

Hunter Dickinson is back

Michigan’s All-American Hunter Dickinson was inserted back into the lineup this evening and immediately made his presence known with his signature baseline hook shot to start the game. He didn’t look too sluggish after missing Friday’s game at Illinois with COVID-19. He still led Michigan 21 points on and efficient 10-of-14 shooting. Dickinson was feeling it so much he even he a 3-pointer at the top of the key and led U-M with six assists.

Michigan has strong first half

After losing three straight and four of its past five games, UM needed a strong start and they got exactly that with a 39-19 lead at the half. Michigan had three players in double figures at the half, and the team shot collectively 55.2% from the field. U-M also connected on four 3s. Michigan’s defense stood out, too, by limiting Maryland to 7-of-24 from the field, good for 30.4%.

Frankie has ups!

Freshman point guard Frankie Collins has been said to have a legitimate vertical leap. Well, one play he showcased his ability to skywalk. In what has to be considered the play of the game, Collins on an alley-oop pass from Dickinson caught the ball as he was hanging in the air and made improbable bucket at the rim. It was exactly a dunk, but Collins definitely showed his athleticism during his highlight play. He would finish with six points on the evening.

Improved 3-point Shooting

While it’s Maryland, one of the worst teams in the Big Ten, Michigan finally saw some perimeter shots find the bottom of the basket. As a team, Michigan connected on 8-of-20 from 3s, good for 40.0%. Houstan, as mentioned, led Michigan with three 3, with DeVante Jones adding two, while Dickinson and Eli Brooks finished with one. Overall, though, Michigan showed promise from the outside and need this type of consistency from three-point range. We’ll see if it continues at Indiana this Sunday.

Up Next

Michigan (8-7, 2-3 Big Ten) next plays at Indiana this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

Basketball Insider: Tim McCormick breaks down Hunter Dickinson’s Soph. season, Caleb Houstan moving to PF

Despite Michigan’s struggles this season, Hunter Dickinson’s individual game has improved. His numbers back it up, says former Michigan great Tim McCormick.

“Hunter Dickinson to me is still an all league player,” McCormick said during his latest episode of “The Michigan Insider” podcast. “He is having an excellent sophomore year. And the numbers are a little bit better, but you’re having growing pains because Livers, Smith and (Wagner) and Chaundee Brown, they’re not there. And they created so much space last year for Hunter when he was playing one on one.”

Dickinson won Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2020-21 and was a consensus second team All-American. He led Michigan with 14.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. As McCormick noted, his stats have improved as a sophomore, as he leads U-M with 16.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

Despite his improved play, Michigan is only a game over .500 at 7-6 and is 1-2 in Big Ten play. What has changed exactly? Well, McCormick explains.

“There was a play against Rutgers. And he’s still scored, but he had to knife between three players. And it was a beautiful move, and he would not have made that last year. But let me let me share his numbers. He’s averaged 16 points, nine boards, 59% from the field against double and triple teams,” McCormick said. “And so, I think Michigan is doing a good enough job of getting him involved. I’d love to see him more just on the post flashing and going side to side and just do some more old school basketball. But I don’t really have a problem with anything Hunter’s doing. And it’s actually a positive that he’s being doubled so much because there should be open shots for other guys.”

If Dickinson still scoring, what’s the biggest issue? McCormick says it starts with Michigan’s roster.

“Now, here is my first roster issue. And I didn’t know this going in because Moussa Diabate is so darn long and athletic. I talked to an NBA Scout earlier this week, I said is Musa a first round pick? He said absolutely. He got a big smile on his face. He said the NBA will love him with his length and the spacing in the NBA game,” he said.

Adding: Now, when Michigan plays Moussa and Hunter at the four and the five, the defense is not good enough right now especially coming to three point line. And it’s neither of their faults 10 years ago, this would have worked fine. As a matter of fact, it would have been great. Not today because threes, fours and fives play different today. Everybody shoots the 3s, with 7-foot guys setting hi middle screens to occupy the defenders and they roll hard. And to me Michigan’s defense when it goes with that jumbo lineup looks like it’s scrambled and chaotic.”

“And if you look at the last three games versus big conference schools, the numbers really back it up. UCF host 52%, Rutgers 48%, Minnesota 51% from 3s in those three games, and Michigan has been outscored from beyond the arc by 36 points in those three games. That’s a major concern.”

Moving forward, McCormick says moving Diabate to the bench might be Michigan’s best option.

“And I just think that with a really big lineup,” he said. “If you’re looking at your best lineup right now, I play Hunter at center and Moussa is backup. Now I know that creates a lot of problems with minutes. But here’s the truth. If you play a massive lineup great size, you sure as heck better win the rebounding battle in a big way. You should block a ton of shots, and you should dominate with your inside outside play. And it’s not happening when those two are on the floor.”

McCormick on Houstan moving to Power Forward

“So, Caleb Houstan is a special player. The NBA scouts still love him. I asked the same scout this week is Caleb Houston a first round draft pick in next summer’s (NBA Draft)? He said absolutely. Here’s the problem. He’s very young physically and right now Caleb Houstan is not a college small forward. He’s a power forward. And I think that he and Hunter would fit better together. I know they’ve been out there for times together. But I think that the Caleb working at four would really be special. So, he’s young, physical, he will grow and mature. He’s going to get more athletic. Remember, he should be a senior in high school. And it’s good to get on the track to get to the NBA early. But right now the game looks a little bit too fast. And when he has two seconds to catch and look at the rim and shoot. It’s beautiful. He just he doesn’t miss very often. The problem is nobody leaves him as a small forward. And I believe that he’s a he’s really trying hard on defense. It would make him better if he’s covering fours. I expected him to be an All-Big Ten small forward this year. I think that power forwards his best position.”

From Bob: “I cannot believe the Steelers are in the playoffs. In their three most recent road games before yesterday they managed to fall behind by a total of 90-3. One game was against Kansas City (their playoff opponent) and they were behind 14-0 after the first quarter and 23-0 at the half. It may not be any better this time. Big Ben averages 5 yards per completion. Not per pass but per completion. It could get real ugly Sunday.

“I cannot remember the playoffs ever being so wide open. There is not a single truly outstanding team and probably 10 teams have a legit shot. Should be fun.”

Bob reached out last week. He could see Chiefs 42, Steelers 21 coming. We all should have seen 42-21 coming.

Hot take I: The Steelers are better off with Ben Roethlisberger in their rear view mirror.

Hot take II: The AFC might appear wide open, but the Chiefs are in the process of slamming it shut.

From Kevin: “I have been having some real Andy Rooney moments. When did it become OK for the whole team to come on the field to celebrate?”

This Journalist Gave a Fiery Speech Criticizing ‘White Americans’ — Then Revealed They Were MLK’s Words

After being invited to give a speech for MLK Day at the UW-Madison campus, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones found out that some members of the group who invited her opposed to her appearance, claiming that her work on The 1619 Project and more didn’t represent the views of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Upon learning of that opposition, Hannah-Jones took matters into her own hands to teach a lesson to her audience. At the last minute, she ditched the speech she planned to give and meshed together King’s own words from addresses he gave between 1956 and 1967 — without letting her audience know upfront that it was his words, and not her own, she would be reading.

Hannah-Jones revealed in a Twitter thread that she found out about the opposition to her appearance in leaked emails that called her a “discredited activist” and “unworthy of such association with King.” By taking his words and “leading the audience to think King’s words were mine,” Hannah-Jones reports her words had an “amazing” effect on the audience. The New York Times writer also noted that she took out the word “Negro” and subbed the word “Black” where necessary so attendees wouldn’t be clued into the fact that the quotes were not from her — they were from King himself.

I was invited to give an MLK speech today and a small number of members of the group hosting me wrote and then leaked emails opposing my giving this speech, as it dishonored Dr. King for me to do so. They called me a “discredited activist” “unworthy of such association with King” — Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) January 17, 2022

The journalist shared important passages from King’s words, including, “The step backwards has a new name today, it is called the white backlash, but the white backlash is nothing new. It is the surfacing of old prejudices, hostilities and ambivalences that have always been there. The white backlash of today is rooted in the same problem that has characterized America ever since the black man landed in chains on the shores of this nation.”

She admitted that there was “uncomfortable silence” in the audience as she gave the speech until the crucial moment she shared that they had been listening to the thoughts and ideas of the activist from over 60 years ago. Hannah-Jones reminded them that, while he was alive, he was labeled a “charlatan, demagogue, communist, traitor” and that “three-quarters of Americans opposed King at his death.”

Oh, the uncomfortable silence as I read Dr. King’s words at a commemoration of Dr. King’s life when people had no idea that these were his words. When I revealed that everything I said to that point was taken from his speeches between ‘56 and 67… Can you say SHOOK! — Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) January 17, 2022

Hannah-Jones wanted to make sure they understood that “people who oppose today what he stood for back then do not get to be the arbiters of his legacy” because “the real Dr. King cannot be commodified, homogenized, and white-washed and whatever side you stand on TODAY is the side you would have been back then.”

It’s a powerful lesson and the exact reason why she created The 1619 project, which, per the New York Times, “aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of the United States’ national narrative.”

The journalist ended the thread by reminding her Twitter followers that his speeches deserve to be read again and understood through an educated, not “miseducated” lens. Hannah-Jones summed up with one final tweet to drive the point home about King’s legacy: “Dr. King was a radical critic of racism, capitalism and militarism. He didn’t die. He was assassinated.”
