“Ray Donovan: The Movie,” 9 and 10:40 p.m., Showtime. The “Ray Donovan” series ended a year ago, with lives shattered. Ray’s daughter was widowed, his half-brother was wanted by police and his dad was running loose with $20 million in stolen stock. Now Ray phones his therapist to say he’s killed his father. Then the story backs up a little — and a lot; flashbacks show the rift that sent the dad to prison for decades. This is beautifully acted and sharply crafted, but it’s also a tough, bleak ride.
“Stars on Stage,” 9 p.m., PBS. Early in this hour, Shoshana Bean does a Barbra Streisand medley. Like Streisand, Bean, 44, is a singer/actress who can turn each song into an epic story. She’s done some Broadway — the original “Hairspray” cast, a replacement in “Wicked” and “Waitress” — plus lots of recordings. There are some great moments here, including a gorgeous duet with Avery Wilson.
Reality and game show overload, 8 p.m. It’s a weird hour, when the only scripted show on the five big commercial broadcast networks is … well, wrestling. NBC has a quick rerun of Monday’s “That’s My Jam,” with Rita Ora, Taika Waititi, Taraji Henson and Normani. That faces “Undercover Boss” on CBS, “Shark Tank” on ABC and “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” on CW.
“Magnum P.I.” and “Blue Bloods,” 9 and 10 p.m., CBS. Here’s the scripted oasis in a reality-stuffed night. First, a nun wants Magnum to investigate after a stranger makes a big cash donation. Then “Blue Bloods” has two key guest stars — Regina Taylor as a police captain who uses her badge to get free things at stores … and Jimmy Buffett as (really) a crooked Jimmy Buffett impersonator.
“Archive 81,” any time, Netflix. Restoring some damaged cassettes from 25 years ago, a researcher pieces together a story of a young woman who vanished while making a documentary about a cult. The eight-part series arrives one day after two other streaming shows: Peacock’s “Wolf Like Me” has Josh Gad falling for Isla Fisher … who might be different during a full moon. HBO Max’s “Peacemaker” is a delight, with John Cena as a self-involved superhero; its opener will also air Saturday on HBO.

Is Blue Bloods new tonight on CBS? Are we going to have a chance to get some great stuff courtesy of season 12 episode 11?
The first order of business here is sharing the great news: There’s a new story coming in a matter of hours! If you’ve been waiting to check out “On the Arm,” the wait is just about over. This is the much-anticipated episode featuring Jimmy Buffett, who is playing a guy pretending to be the singer. There’s a lot of other great stuff happening in here, as well, and we suggest that you check out the full synopsis below to get a good sense of all of it:
“On The Arm” – Danny pursues Dickie Delaney (Jimmy Buffett), a con artist pretending to be the legendary singer Jimmy Buffett, after he’s tricked into paying for the scammer’s meal at an expensive restaurant. Also, Frank investigates NYPD Captain Terrell (Regina Taylor), who is using her badge to get free wares from local stores; Erin worries about her reputation when she’s the subject of a salacious, anonymous police blog; and Jamie introduces a decades-old saluting rule in the precinct, on the CBS Original series BLUE BLOODS, Friday, Jan. 14 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett guest stars as Dickie Delaney, a Jimmy Buffett impersonator. Regina Taylor guest stars as NYPD Captain Terrell.
Out of all the stories that are mentioned in here, we imagine that the Erin one is the only one that could have long-term ramifications. She’s had the most serialized story this season as she contemplates a run for District Attorney. We do think that eventually, she could decide to go through with it, and we could see a further exploration of that campaign both at the end of the season and then also the fall, provided Blue Bloods is renewed. We’ll just have to see how things unfold there!

Worth Watching: ‘Ray Donovan’ Last Stand, Denzel Is ‘Macbeth,’ ‘After Life’ Final Season, A Real ‘Scream’

What matters most in this feature-length sequel is that it represents Ray Donovan: The Ending—something of which fans were deprived when the series was abruptly canceled after seven seasons. Picking up from 2020’s bloody cliffhanger, the movie depicts a final reckoning between the moody fixer Ray (star and co-writer Liev Schreiber) and his wayward father Mickey (Jon Voight). Flashbacks that are a lot more satisfying than in last year’s Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark feature their younger selves—Chris Gray as Ray and Bill Heck as a swaggering, charismatic Mickey—as they fatefully clash, setting up the schism that would fuel the series. ‘Blue Bloods’: Danny’s Volcano Blows in Latest Encounter With Music Legend

After solving a case with country music star Lyle Lovett on last week’s episode of Blue Bloods, Donnie Wahlberg shared the screen with Jimmy Buffett in “On The Arm.” The “Margaritaville” singer played two roles in the episode, with one role leading to Danny’s personal volcano to blow. That son of a son of a sailor really got under Det. Danny Reagan’s skin.
At the start of his story, Danny and Det. Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) were out celebrating her birthday at a fancy restaurant. Danny spotted a man who looked just like Buffett at the bar. After getting up the courage to talk to him and tell him how much he loved his music, Danny told the waiter he would pay for Buffett’s meal and drinks. (Danny revealed that it was his late brother Joe who turned him into a Parrothead.)

The next day at the precinct, Baez burst Danny’s bubble. It turned out that he could not have met the real Buffett, since he was performing in Texas. It was an imposter! Danny was angry and a little embarrassed. After all, he’s a big detective and he couldn’t tell the difference between the real Buffett and an impersonator! Danny later confronted the man, who turned out to be Dickie Delaney. Surprisingly, Delaney knew all the ways to get around fraud and identity theft charges, so Danny couldn’t arrest the guy.
Later on a the precinct, a “Jimmy Buffett” showed up to talk to Danny and he was convinced it was Delaney again. This time though, it was the real Jimmy Buffett (also played by the real Jimmy Buffett). It turns out that Buffett knows about Delaney and he asked Danny if the two could meet. They later met at a surf shop (of course) and Buffett told Delaney to pay Danny back as much as he could. The singer also warned Delaney to stop impersonating him for at least a year. Danny was confused, but Buffett said he’d been letting Delaney get away with this since the 1980s because the con man had a rough life.
“For all that I’ve been given, if I can’t show a little mercy, who would I be?” Buffett asked Danny. “You’re a good man, Jimmy Buffett,” Danny replied.
While Danny’s story with Buffett was a lot of fun, the other three stories in “On The Arm” where more serious. Jamie (Will Estes) ran intro trouble with his precinct when he instituted an old rule about saluting the front desk every time an officer enters the building. However, this actually helped him stop a man posing as a police officer because the man didn’t know how to salute correctly. Erin’s (Bridget Moynahan) story involved her tracking down the author of a blog criticial of her. The author was discovered to be a new intern who happens to be a cousin of the mayor, who is still trying to discredit the Reagans. Garrett (Gregory Jbara) convinced Erin to let the woman continue working in the office and they plan to feed her fake info.
Frank (Tom Selleck) clashed with Capt. Terrell (Regina Taylor) because she was using her badge to get free food and sundries. The case was complicated because Terrell donated everything to veterans’ groups. In the end, Frank decided to let her continue serving, but she needed to pay at least discount prices. During the family dinner, the Reagans joked about their first concerts. Frank said he and his wife Mary didn’t go to concerts because they “preferred to make their own music,” which grossed everyone out. Blue Bloods airs on CBS Fridays at 10 p.m. ET.
