Clippers’ Nicolas Batum enters NBA’s health and safety protocols again

Coming off one of the best scoring performances of his 14 NBA seasons, Clippers forward Nicolas Batum entered the NBA’s health and safety protocols Wednesday as the team was preparing for the first stop in its eight-game trip.
Batum will miss the game Wednesday in Denver, but with the Clippers on the road for 13 days, and the NBA last month providing a quicker pathway for players to clear the COVID-related protocols, it’s possible for Batum to rejoin the team before the trip ends.
The Clippers were rarely affected by COVID last season, but this season the protocols have sidelined 10 players for a total of 45 games. This is the second time that Batum, who scored all 32 of his points in the second half Monday in a victory against Indiana, has entered protocols this season, with the first leading to an eight-game absence that began in late November. Coach Tyronn Lue said that he hears from others around the league discussing his team’s rash of absences “all the time.”
“I guess we dodged a bullet last year, but now it’s catching up with us this year,” he said at the team’s shoot-around Wednesday morning. “It’s tough, but whatever. It is what it is.”
Batum’s absence comes at a time when the Clippers (22-23) believed they would be at nearly full strength, after Justise Winslow and Luke Kennard, who had missed eight consecutive games, each cleared protocols in recent days. Their challenges aren’t over, with their first opportunity to play in days — or in Kennard’s case, since Dec. 31 — coming one mile above sea level at Ball Arena, a venue whose altitude is challenging enough for those already in basketball shape.
“It’s a tough place to come back for your first game,” Lue said.
Kennard tested positive before the Clippers’ Jan. 1 victory in Brooklyn and said he first felt symptoms within the next two days.
“I had a rough few days,” Kennard said. “I was stuck in New York for a while, which wasn’t fun, but [was] able to get back [to Los Angeles] and still couldn’t clear it. It was a tough couple weeks.”
Story continues
Once at his home in Los Angeles, Kennard had some exercise equipment available to begin working out again, saying he made do by riding an exercise bike and running a hill near his home. But he didn’t shoot a basketball until “two or three days ago,” he said.
“I feel good overall, did everything I could while I was out to get back but definitely going to be a process over the next couple of weeks on this trip,” Kennard said.
Denver (22-20) won’t have former Clipper JaMychal Green available because of his own stay in health and safety protocols.

Eastman School of Music graduate heading home to Ukraine, as tensions rise in region
]
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A recent graduate of the Eastman School of Music is heading back to his home country of Ukraine. This, as Russian troops continue to amass forces on the eastern and northern border of the country. The former student is facing an uncertain future there — as Moscow continues its game of military chess in that region.
With his visa set to expire, Kostia Lukyniuk, who goes by the stage name ‘Kostia Violin’, is heading home to the western portion of Ukraine. The situation is uncertain– as Russia continues to amass forces on the border. But this kind of aggressive action from Moscow is nothing new to Kostia.
“They took a part of my country, which is Crimea. They invaded it and took it with no backlash from the international community,” he says referring to the 2014 takeover of Crimea.
Kostia just graduated from the Eastman School of Music, his passion is the violin. He hopes to be able to take his talents back to a place– that is free of any potential conflict.
“I’m really glad I just pushed it through, and now I have a diploma, I have this performance certificate, I’m just very excited,” he says.
The chance to play for his family and countrymen is something that excites him. While he lives away from where the Russian troops are setting up forces, it could still put that musical future in jeopardy– should anything happen. It’s a situation that could quickly spiral.

“I would definitely not want any troops from any country there. I would not want American troops there. I would not want it to turn into another Afghanistan,” he says concerned about any occupying force.
He hopes Russian President Vladimir Putin backs away and eventually returns Crimea. Ukraine he says has plenty of its own culture to offer the world without any intervention.
“We have amazing music, we have amazing talents, and we have amazing food. If anybody wants to try something, you guys gotta try Borscht,” he says (Borscht, a kind of beet soup).
In a way, he’s confident something will be worked out– and he will play in peace. “I am just excited to go back home, I’m excited to share my music,” he says.
Kostia has a new music album ‘Blessed’ dropping Thursday. If you want to hear some more of his violin music, click here.

NEW YORK (AP) — HBO and HBO Max have become the top contenders at the GLAAD Media Awards with a combined 19 nominations, landing the bulk of its nods for its TV shows like “Hacks,” “The Other Two” and “The Sex Lives of College Girls.”
The annual awards honors media for fair and accurate representations of LGBTQ people. Streaming services nabbed a total of 63 nominees, with cable receiving 39 nominations, and broadcast networks receiving 17 nominations.
The films nominated include “Eternals” (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures), “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” (Amazon Studios), “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” (Netflix), “tick, tick… BOOM!” (Netflix) and “West Side Story” (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures).
Netflix had 17 nominees, Hulu received seven nominations, while ABC, MSNBC and Peacock all received four nominations. In the Spanish-language categories, Univision and Telemundo both received two nominations.
Of the 30 television shows nominated in three categories — outstanding comedy series, outstanding drama series and outstanding new TV series — 18 feature transgender or nonbinary characters, including “Pose,” “9-1-1: Lone Star,” “Good Trouble,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The L Word: Generation Q,” “Star Trek: Discovery” and “The Sex Lives of College Girls.”
GLAAD noted that the representation came during a year when anti-transgender violence rose and lawmakers across the U.S. introduced a number of bills attempting to stop transgender youth from participating in sports and accessing health care.
Music artists who earned GLAAD nominations include Lil Nas X, Halsey, Arlo Parks, Japanese Breakfast, Kaytranada, Demi Lovato, Mykki Blanco, and BROCKHAMPTON. Among the special recognition award recipients was “Jeopardy!” champion Amy Schneider and “The Laverne Cox Show.”
Last year, Netflix was the top contender, with a leading 26 nominations. This year’s list includes 246 nominees across 30 categories — up from 198 nominees across 28 categories last year.
