‘Scream’ Review: Kill Me Again, Again
]
Throttled by a corrosive self-awareness, the latest “Scream” is a slasher movie with resting smug face, so enamored of its own mythology that its characters speak of little else.
This self-referential chatter, disguised as commentary on the franchise-within-the-franchise, “Stab,” means that there’s scarcely a line of dialogue that doesn’t land with a wink and a nudge.
“There are certain rules to surviving a ‘Stab’ movie,” Dewey (David Arquette), now a disgraced former police officer and over-imbiber, tells the latest batch of potential victims. But the knowingness that was cute in Wes Craven’s original picture has, over the course of 25 years and three sequels, curdled into complacency, leaving James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick’s screenplay so marooned in the meta it feels weirdly plotless. Thus Dewey, having suffered a total of nine stabbings during the series, is now viewed as an expert to the teenagers seeking his advice when the Ghostface killer once again stalks the streets of Woodsboro.
Scream to release on January 14 in Canadian theatres that are open
]
Scream (also known as 5cream) will only play in theatres in certain parts of Canada.
According to a tweet from Barry Hertz, The Globe and Mail’s deputy arts editor/film editor, the anticipated horror movie will premiere on January 14th in Canadian theatres that are currently open.
This means that moviegoers in Ontario and Quebec will be out of luck as both provinces’ theatres are entirely closed amid the ongoing COVID-19 Omnicron variant surge.

Further, according to Hertz, the film will not receive an early premium video on demand release (PVOD) on platforms like iTunes and Google Play in these specific regions but will play in Ontario/Quebec when theatres re-open.
Cineplex recently announced that it has temporarily laid off nearly 5,000 part-time employees in Ontario due to the province’s mandated closure of theatres.

Scream takes place 25 years after a streak of murders occurred in the town of Woodsboro, California, with a new killer donning the Ghostface mask and targeting a group of teenagers. Notably, Guelph, Ontario’s own Neve Campbell reprises her Scream series role of Sidney Prescott in the new film.

Neve Campbell is the Scream Queen. The successor to a legacy passed down by actresses including Jamie Lee Curtis and Signourney Weaver, Neve (and her counterpart, Sidney Prescott) has secured her reputation as modern horror’s foremost final girl, fronting the Scream franchise for the last 20 years and counting. In addition to starring in five Scream sequels (count them… five!), Neve’s also taken roles in some of the era’s spookier cult classics: the brooding Bonnie Harper in The Craft and outcast Suzie Marie Toller in erotic thriller Wild Things. Of course, as the reigning queen of 90s horror, Neve’s 90s wardrobe ran ultra-gothic — and even a touch regal — in slip dresses, brocade styles, Marie Antoinette curls, powdered make-up and more corsets than Scream sequels. Here, to celebrate the release of Scream 5 (2022), we take a look back at some of Neve’s most iconic outfits.

At The Craft premiere, 1996
In early 1996, Neve Campbell kicked off her career in horror with a supporting role in supernatural teen flick The Craft. In the film, Neve plays Bonnie Harper, one fourth of a coven of high-school outcasts-turned-witches. While The Craft received mixed reviews at the time of its release, the flick went on to become a cult classic, particularly for its grungey-gothic fashions: tennis skirts, thigh-high socks, floral maxi dresses and rosary necklaces. Here, to the film’s premiere, Neve wears a corseted brocade mini that wouldn’t look out of place in the coven’s covetable wardrobe.

At the Scream premiere, 1996
Not eight months after the release of The Craft, Wes Craven’s Scream hit theatres to critical acclaim. With its biting satire and all-star cast, Scream became the de facto horror film of the decade. And, as Sidney Prescott, the film’s protagonist and final girl, Neve became the genre’s presiding ingenue. Here, to the film’s premiere, the star wears an appropriately gothic slip dress and chiffon shawl.

At the MTV Movie Awards, 1997
Corset #2. To the MTV Movie Awards (where Scream scooped Best Movie, obviously), the actress paired this sheer number with a leopard maxi skirt and matching auburn hair.

At the Emmy Awards, 1997
Spooky and… sweet? Following Scream’s success, Neve attended the 1997 Emmy Awards wearing a gown befitting of her teen-scream-queen status: a satin column gown bedecked in bows, tulle and a slit up to there.

At the Scream 2 premiere, 1997
Neve reprised her role as Sidney in 1997’s Scream 2. The sequel, which was released not even a year after its predecessor, served as a take-down of horrible horror sequels, without becoming one itself. Scream 2 garnered as much — if not more — critical acclaim as the original, and lead Neve to win her first MTV Movie Award. Here, the actress attends the movie’s premiere with Sarah Michelle Gellar in yet another corset. This time, she paired the look with towering Marie Antoinette-esque curls, face powder and a devastating crimson lip.

At the Wild Things premiere, 1998
In 1998, Neve pivoted away from true horror with erotic thriller Wild Things. At the film’s premiere, Neve stepped out on the red carpet in a naked knit set that merged two of the decade’s raciest trends — the naked dress and sexy knitwear — into one iconic look.

At a Party of Five party, 1998
Before Neve was Sidney Prescott, she was Julia Salinger. In 1994, Neve was cast in TV drama Party of Five, starring as 15-year old Julia alongside an ensemble cast including Matthew Fox and Jennifer Love Hewitt. The critically-acclaimed small-screen series ran for five years, pulling the plug in 2000 after Neve left to pursue a career on the big screen. We’re glad she did. Here, to a Party of Five cast party, the actress wears this list’s fourth and final corset paired with pedal-pushers, Mary Janes and a leather coat. In all-black, it’s a perfectly 90s, perfectly spooky look befitting of the decade’s favourite final girl.

Mikey Madison: 5 Things To Know About The New ‘Scream’ Star
]
Mikey Madison is one of the newcomers to the beloved ‘Scream’ franchise. Get to know more about the talented actress here.
Scream 5, the latest installment in the popular slasher film franchise, has quite the star-studded cast. For starters, you have Scream veterans Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell back for the fifth movie. Marley Shelton, who first appeared in Scream 4, will return as well. Plus, there’s a talented group of actors who are joining the Scream franchise. Mikey Madison, 22, is among those new faces. She’ll be playing Amber Freeman in the film, which arrives in theaters on January 14.
Unfamiliar with Mikey Madison? Don’t worry, HollywoodLife has got you covered with five key facts to know about Mikey, before she makes her big Scream debut.
- Mikey was a competitive horseback rider.
Mikey was involved in a much different career before acting. While growing up in Los Angeles, Mikey was pursuing competitive horseback riding. But once she turned 15, that changed. “All of a sudden, I became really interested in this,” she told Vulture in April 2019 when asked about her origins in acting. “I’m not really sure what sparked that in my head, but it did. My dad’s a big film buff, so I think I acquired some of those traits.” Mikey also explained that while no one in her family was involving in acting, she “met the right people along the way and got really lucky.”
- She has 4 siblings.
Mikey comes from a big family. “I have two older sisters who are in their 30s, a twin brother, and another brother,” she told InStyle in November 2016. “So right now I’m living with two teenage boys at home. Me and my brothers all have different personalities and we definitely clash over living together in a small space,” the actress added. One of Mikey’s sisters is married to a film writer, which, according to Women’s Wear Daily, helped inspire her to pursue acting.
- She made her acting debut in 2013.
Mikey’s very first acting role was in the 2013 short film Retirement, according to her IMDb page. The California native starred in her first feature film, Liza, Liza, Skies are Grey, in 2015. Her next film roles were 2018’s Monster and Nostalgia. Then, Mikey snagged a role in Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood opposite Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Margaret Qualley, Margot Robbie, Timothy Olyphant, Austin Butler, Dakota Fanning, Al Pacino, and more stars. She played Sadie, a follower of the deadly Manson family. Mikey also voiced Candi the Barista in the animated The Addams Family movie. On television, she’s starred in FX’s Better Things (more on that below) and appeared on two episodes of Imposters on Bravo.
- She stars in ‘Better Things’.
So far, Mikey’s most notable acting role has been Max Fox in Better Things. She’s been among the show’s main cast since it premiered in 2016. Her character, Max, is the volatile and angry daughter of Pamela Adlon‘s Sam Fox. Better Things also stars Hannah Alligood, Olivia Edward, and Celia Imrie. The fifth and final season premieres on February 28.
Mikey talked about her love for playing Max on Better Things in her InStyle interview. “I definitely gravitate toward characters that have a lot of integrity and it’s so important to be to be working on shows that tell great stories,” she explained. “I think you have to be a little in love with the character you’re playing because that way you can’t judge the decisions they make that you have to play out on screen, and that’s certainly the case with Max.”
- Mikey is a new addition to the ‘Scream’ franchise.
Mikey is making a very exciting debut in the Scream franchise. In an interview with The Movie Times, she said she loves horror films and that she “was a big fan” of the first Scream movie. “One of the pitches that the directors talked to me about is that they were trying to make it feel like the original. I just loved talking to them. I had good chemistry with them right away. I was attracted to it right from the beginning.”
Joining Mikey for Scream 5 is fellow newcomers Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, and Dylan Minnette. Fans will have to watch the film to see if Mikey’s Amber and the other new characters in Scream 5 survive the terrifying Ghostface masked killer.
