Newcomer Mika Abdalla stars in the film as Avery, a straight-A student whose long-distance boyfriend wants to get physical. Because Avery is used to excelling in school, she decides to apply the same study methods to mastering “sexual excellence” and creates an app designed to guide users to a “successful sexual experience.” She elicits advice from fellow classmates and her three moms, played by Margert Cho, Fortune Feimster and Rebecca Henderson, and commissions her childhood friend Larson (Jake Short) to help her prepare for first-time sex.
Paris plays Avery’s classmate Danica, an unapologetic, sexually experienced high schooler who “wears combat boots and listens to metal music,” the 23-year-old actress told Variety.
“That’s who I was when I was in high school,” she said. “And I love how unapologetically herself she is and that she’s not slut-shamed or shamed at all. I loved that she is respected and renowned for her knowledge, which is how it should be!”
Mason Versaw, Skai Jackson, Alex D. Jennings, Hayden Szeto, Paisley Herrera and Artemis Pebdani round out the cast.
Cho likened Sex Appeal to a modernized ’80s teen coming-of-age story told from a female perspective. “It reminded me of kind of a new version of Weird Science. Those kinds of films built my entire consciousness,” Cho told Syracuse.com. “[Those] stories are important, but we don’t have them from a female perspective and to a female perspective too, so I really appreciated that.”
Sex Appeal is streaming exclusively on Hulu at no extra charge to subscribers. Isabelle Fuhrman Boards Jordan Gertner’s Action-Adventure Pic ‘Sheroes’ Amid Awards Buzz For ‘The Novice’
]
EXCLUSIVE: Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice, Orphan) has signed on to star in Sheroes, an action-adventure pic helmed by Spring Breakers producer Jordan Gertner, which will enter production in Thailand later this month.
The film penned by Gertner follows four girlfriends as they set out for a hedonistic adventure in paradise. When they quickly get in over their heads, each girl is called upon to employ her own unique set of skills, doing whatever it takes to come out alive and, if possible, remain friends.
Fuhrman will play Ezra, a burgeoning actress leaving behind a trail of mayhem and chaos on this wild ride.
Gertner is producing the pic, which also stars Wallis Day (Batwoman, Krypton), Skai Jackson (The Man in the White Van, Dragons: Rescue Riders), Sasha Luss (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets) and Jack Kesy (Claws, Deadpool 2).
Fuhrman’s latest casting comes amid awards buzz for her turn in The Novice, the IFC Films title from writer-director Lauren Hadaway, which was released in theaters and on digital and VOD platforms last month. In the drama based on Hadaway’s personal experiences, she portrays queer college freshman Alex Dall, who joins her university’s rowing team and undertakes an obsessive physical and psychological journey to make it to the top varsity boat. The actress claimed the Tribeca Film Festival’s prize for Best Actress upon the film’s debut there last year and has gone on to score an Independent Spirit Award nomination as well, with Leonardo DiCaprio among those speaking out about the strength of her performance.
Fuhrman found her breakout role in Jaume Collet-Serra’s psychological horror film Orphan, produced by DiCaprio, and will soon appear alongside Julia Stiles in its sequel Orphan: First Kill for Paramount Players. (Check out an exclusive conversation on The Novice between Fuhrman and Stiles above.) The actress has also previously appeared in Showtime’s Masters of Sex, as well as such films as The Hunger Games and After Earth.
Fuhrman is represented by Luber Roklin Entertainment and UTA; Day by UTA and Hamilton Hodell in the UK; Jackson by Paradigm, Lighthouse Management & Media and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller; Luss by ICM Partners and Artist International Group; and Kesy by Paradigm, Luber Roklin Entertainment and Brecheen Feldman Breimer.
‘Sex Appeal’: How to watch new American High movie shot in Syracuse
]
Get ready to watch “Sex Appeal.”
The new American High movie, shot in Syracuse last year, premieres on Hulu this Friday, Jan. 14. Here’s everything you need to know about the film, including how to watch it.
What is “Sex Appeal” about?
The plot centers on Avery Hansen-White (“Project MC2″ actress Mika Abdalla), a high school student who recruits her best friend Larson (”A.N.T. Farm” actor Jake Short) to practice sex with as a scientific experiment before taking her relationship with her boyfriend to the next level at an upcoming STEM conference (“nerd prom”). She creates an app to study the data (hence the film’s title, “Sex APPeal”) but soon realizes there’s more to sex and love than just the physical acts: Relationships require both head and heart.
“The only science she doesn’t get is chemistry,” the film’s tagline says.
Who’s in the movie?
Besides Abdalla and Short, the cast includes Margaret Cho (“30 Rock”), Fortune Feimster (“The Mindy Project”), Rebecca Henderson (“Westworld”), Artemis Pebdani (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), Skai Jackson (”Jessie”), and Paris Jackson, the daughter of pop music legend Michael Jackson. Tate Hanyock, who wrote the script, also appears as a teacher.

“Sex Appeal” is the feature-length directorial debut for Talia Osteen (HBO’s “Blindsided”) and executive produced by Hanyock.
The film is produced by Jeremy Garelick, Will Phelps and Ryan Bennett for American High, Mark Fasano and Tobias Weymar for Nickel City, Kendrick Tan for Lit Entertainment, and Michael Glassman for LD Entertainment.
How do I watch “Sex Appeal?”
“Sex Appeal” is streaming exclusively on Hulu at no extra charge to subscribers. Hulu subscriptions are available at hulu.com starting at $6.99 a month with ads or $12.99 without ads; Hulu also offers a bundle deal with Hulu (ad-supported), Disney+ and ESPN+ together for $13.99 a month, and Hulu + Live TV includes more than 75 live TV channels for $69.99 a month.
The release date for “Sex Appeal” is Friday, Jan. 14, 2022.
What is “Sex Appeal” rated?
The movie is being released directly onto the streaming service Hulu and not in theaters, so it doesn’t have a traditional MPAA rating like PG-13 or R, but it is rated TV-MA for mature audiences. Viewer discretion is advised as much of the film involves frank discussions about sex and sexual acts; sex is never explicitly shown but includes very suggestive sequences such as a construction worker going down a manhole, a rocket exploding, and synchronized swimming.
If you’re a parent, the trailer gives you a pretty good idea of whether your kids are old enough to watch:
Where was “Sex Appeal” filmed?
Scenes were shot in early 2020 at Syracuse Studios (the former A.V. Zogg Middle School in Liverpool), Onondaga Lake Park, and the village of Liverpool, N.Y.
Other movie recommendations?
Fans of “Sex Appeal” may also enjoy films like “Weird Science,” “American Pie,” “Sexify,” “Sex Education” and “The To-Do List.”
Other American High movies shot in Syracuse currently available on Hulu also include: “Plan B,” “The Binge,” “Big Time Adolescence,” and “The Ultimate Playlist of Noise.”

Middle parts If you’ve spent any time on TikTok, you’ll know that gen Z will not be accepting any side parts any time soon. Monochrome outfits have been having a moment—from Zendaya’s spicy red carpet look to politicians’ style picks at last year’s inauguration. While these examples are glamorous, it’s a safe bet to assume many regular folks have also been wearing our own monochrome outfits as we navigate working from home. (Anyone showing up for work in a groutfit?)
Make 2022 the year of good decisions. Start by signing up for our newsletter for twice-weekly tips, reviews and more from our experts.
Instagram influencers have also rocked monochrome styles for the better part of the year, such as Dariadéh’s founder, Madeleine Darya Alizadeh, in cozy loungewear; blogger Jules Acree in a summery, white ‘fit; and artist Maddy Churm in a solid black jumpsuit. It’s a trend that’s hard to ignore.
What is monochrome style?
Monochrome styling is simply wearing an outfit that is a single shade of color. A monochrome outfit may consist of several pieces, separates, layers, textures and slight color variants, but overall, the look is of one intentional color. These outfits are effortless yet elevated and work well for people who enjoy wearing a certain tone, or even all-denim and matching patterns.
Why wear monochrome?
For one, the visual attraction of a colorful outfit has impact. But also, putting together items that are in the same hue makes getting dressed quick and easy. Plus, by definition, monochromatic styles feature solid-color items, making each piece a great candidate for mixing and matching with other items in your wardrobe. A few monochrome styles are wardrobe staples: black leggings, a white tank top and so on. The more daring you are, the more you can include bright colors or branch out into head-to-toe patterns. If you wear an item often, not only does it decreases the item’s cost per wear, it increases its personal value to you—a byproduct of something called dopamine dressing, in which your clothes can improve your mood.

- Girlfriend Collective
Girlfriend Collective has steadily grown in the last few years, expanding from selling only leggings to a wider range of clothing styles for bodies of all sizes and genders. The brand helps divert plastic water bottles from waterways by turning them into fabric for its clothing, and it has two color categories for all of its items: essentials (or the ones offered all of the time, while supplies last) and limited, seasonal shades. Its essential colors include black and navy, while limited shades are seasonal and currently include bright geranium, ivory and several hues of tan and brown.
Because Girlfriend Collective’s color options are relatively narrow and consistent from piece to piece, it makes putting together a monochrome outfit a cinch. And while you can find plenty of workout basics at Girlfriend Collective such as bras and those famed women’s leggings, the brand also sells warmup wear, exercise dresses and leggings for all, with prices around $42 to $98 per piece. The brand is also size-inclusive, with all of its stock available in women’s sizes XXXS to 6XL.
