Ben Shephard’s agonising health battle after triple injury
]
Good Morning Britain star Ben Shephard was always active and sporty and has run 14 marathons - but an agonising triple leg injury has left him needing surgery and months of gruelling rehab
When he’s not grilling politicians in the Good Morning Britain studio, Ben Shephard uses his social media accounts to keep fans updated on the ups and downs of his personal life - his current painful health battle has been no exception.
Earlier this week, he posted a video of his leg wired up to a scary-looking contraption he compared to a sci-fi horror film.
It’s the latest in long list of treatments Ben has been forced to undergo in his slow recovery from an agonising double leg injury he suffered last year.
The active TV host loves sports, listing kitesurfing, rugby, golf and wakeboarding as some of his hobbies and completing 14 marathons in the past ten years.
He even climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2019 alongside celebs including Ronan Keating, Denise Van Outen and Gary Barlow.

But in 2021, the 47-year-old ruptured his ACL, tore his meniscus and fractured his leg during a football match.
He explained the gruesome injury to viewers after his GMB co-host Susanna Reid remarked on his leg brace.
“I wish I had taken a photograph in my dressing room this morning, because Ben came in with quite the get up on your leg,” she said.
“Quite the outfit, yep,” replied Ben.
He continued: “A few weeks to go, you may remember I played in the Cup Final of the Arthur Dunn veterans cup, my old boys’ team.
“We won the Cup Final, but I started with two legs and ended with one.

“Without realising, I have ruptured my ACL, I’ve torn the meniscus and I’ve fractured part of my leg as well.”
That summer, Ben shared that he was preparing from surgery, posting photos from his hospital bed.
“Op happens today!! so far so good - arrow on the correct leg @andipeters on the tv + super stylish socks in place,” he wrote.
A few hours later, a tired Ben addressed his fans as he said: “Hi everybody, thank you for all the amazing, lovely messages.
“For those who didn’t know, I ruptured my ACL and tore my meniscus in my knee playing football.”
He went on to share a look at his leg, which was wrapped up.

“That’s how it looks at the moment. That’s not fake tan by the way, I promise, despite my Essex roots,” he added.
Gesturing to the orange-yellow colour on his legs, he quipped: “I didn’t fake tan before my surgery.”
“So they’ve repaired the ACL and meniscus and now starts the rehab - very slow, long, rehab. Have to say, the painkillers seem to be doing the job right now!”
Tagging Kate Garraway and Susanna, he joked: “I can’t believe I broadcast on painkillers like this a few years back!
“Kate Garraway and Susanna Reid - what were you thinking letting me broadcast when I felt like this?!”
After spending the night in hospital and taking two weeks off GMB to recover, Ben received messages of well-wishes from his co-stars.
Image: Instagram) Instagram) Image: Instagram) Instagram)
“Oh you are always a consummate broadcaster Ben Shephard, and good luck with your recovery,” Susanna said on air.
“I know Ben is going to be back in the studio very soon. He watches us still from the hospital bed and I am sure he will be watching the game from there this evening.
“Lots of love to you Ben, get well soon.”
When Ben returned to the studio, he had his leg elevated by a chair as he sat on the panel, joking that he “deserved to have his feet up”.
The same week, he also revealed he was undergoing intensive physiotherapy.
Taking to Instagram, Ben shared a video clip of his leg in an electrostimulation machine before he attempted some squats.
“Very excited,” he said as he opened up the box containing the tool.
“I’ve got some shiny new kit, a little bit of tech. It’s gonna make my muscles work while I’m doing my rehab.”
One he was all strapped into the brace and the machine was pumping, Ben wrote: “It’s alive!! Back on the @compex_uk trying to stimulate my quad - feels and looks v odd!”
He added: “Right just trying to stimulate the quad while reducing the swelling around my knee.
“Gone full bionic leg,” he joked.
And the session was a success, he revealed, as he posted a photo of his straightened leg, writing: “That final degree means I got the leg straight.
“Can’t believe the effort just to straighten the leg.”
His delighted physiotherapist, Mo, confirmed using a protractor that Ben had indeed managed to straighten his leg, and the pair celebrated his progress.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel would be ‘very ANGRY’ if rivals are abusing postponement rules
]
Thomas Tuchel admits he will be ‘very, very angry’ if he discovers rival teams are bending the Premier League’s emergency Covid rules to suit their own needs.
Leicester were allowed to postpone a game against Everton because of a combination of positive Covid cases, injuries and players on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Their game against Burnley on Saturday is also off and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta claimed the derby against Tottenham could be in doubt after losing more players.
‘I strongly, strongly hope that’s not the case otherwise I would be very, very angry,’ said Tuchel when asked if he thought clubs were seeking to gain a sporting advantage from rules introduced to ease the problems of Covid isolation.
‘We are doing everything we can to make games happen and we were made to play when we thought we should maybe not. I can only strongly hope the rules are the same rules for everybody.’
Thomas Tuchel produced an impassioned plea for clarity over postponement rules right now
After Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta suggested they may need to have Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham postponed due to a lack of players available
Chelsea’s request to postpone a game at Wolves in December, when seven of Tuchel’s first-team players tested positive and the club’s academy was closed due to an outbreak, was rejected by the Premier League.
They drew 0-0 at Molineux, with Tuchel forced to play players he feared were not ready after injury. He named only six substitutes including two goalkeepers.
Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen will miss the top-of-the-table clash at Manchester City on Saturday after testing positive.
The Blues are without No 1 goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who is at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, and have been mired in a Covid crisis in the last four weeks.
Speaking after a 0-0 draw with Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, Arteta said when asked about a potential postponement.
‘[Postponement] is a possibility in every game, from our side and the opponents’ side with the issues everyone is having, and it is happening every week. But we try to prepare the game thinking we will play.’
As per Premier League rules, detailed on their website, clubs must provide the following when applying for a match to be postponed:
Players and staff who have returned a positive COVID-19 test, their vaccination status and, if known, the source of their infections
Players and staff who are self-isolating
Players who are unavailable to play through injury or illness
Players listed on the club’s squad list who are still available to play in the match, including appropriately experienced Under-21 players (which includes Under-21 players who have played for the club, another Premier League or EFL club, or an overseas club in the current season. However, any Under-21 player who participates in a club’s FA Cup Round Three match and has not played in any other first-team competitions for the club this season will not be considered by the Board as appropriately experienced)
Supporting medical information to verify the status of each unavailable player, which will be reviewed by the League’s medical advisers
Christensen’s absence increases the defensive problems for Tuchel who is already without wing-backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James, and centre-half Trevoh Chalobah, through injury.
Kenedy, who can play at left wing-back, has been recalled from a loan at Flamengo and the Chelsea boss claims he has the chance to resurrect a career at Stamford Bridge.
‘This is a huge opportunity for him to make his mark at this club,’ said Tuchel. ‘We will push and support him as best we can. We can’t say Kenedy is the solution but he can be a solution.
‘We have injuries at wing-back. We have suffered a lot. We suffered a lot in midfield from Covid and injuries, and now the midfielders are coming back we suffer in central defence.’
Leicester’s trip to Burnley became the 20th Premier League game this season to be postponed
Chelsea are also trying to recall left-back Emerson Palmieri from his loan at Lyon and considering a move in the transfer market to strengthen with a wing-back on the right.
Tuchel’s squad has been ravaged with positive Covid tests in the last month with Mateo Kovacic, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner all having to isolate in recent weeks.
The Blues had only just managed a clean coronavirus slate for Wednesday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg win at Tottenham.
Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante returned after isolation to take a seat on the bench in north London in midweek, but Chelsea only lasted two days without any Covid absentees.
Chelsea boss Tuchel lamented the uncertainty of Covid-19 testing as akin to ‘catching fish’, with a raft of players still finding their feet after absences and others now missing again.
Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has now seen three successive league games postponed
‘To have the news that Andreas Christensen is again out after we waited so long for him, and now he plays so, so strong, and again he’s out,’ Tuchel said.
‘It’s a bit of a setback for everybody, for us mentally. We need to over-perform to catch City and be on top of the Premier League. And to over-perform we need simply everybody.
‘It is Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante, but it’s Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante with one training session.
‘We need a bit more of a fight to bring out the extra edge. This is what we’re missing, not in a bad way, but it’s not enough. You finally have players back, and it’s just like catching fish.’
