RALF SCHUMACHER blasted Lewis Hamilton for skipping the Formula One gala following the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Hamilton, 37, missed out on a record-breaking eighth world title when he was pipped on the final lap of the season by Max Verstappen.

And in the acrimony that followed with Mercedes launching an immediate protest before giving up on their appeal, the Brit snubbed the end-of-season party.

Now Schumacher, younger brother of seven-time world champion Michael, has claimed the driver’s behaviour is disrespectful to the new champ Verstappen.

He told Sky Sports in Germany: “It’s not at all fair to Max Verstappen to skip the gala.”

After the Abu Dhabi finale, Hamilton said ‘we will see about next year’ in a cryptic interview with Jenson Button.

Neither he nor his Mercedes team did any further media following the race and he has not posted on social media since.

And there is growing speculation the Stevenage star could retire before the 2022 season.

Should he leave Mercedes, Schumacher reckons Sebastian Vettel would be the ideal replacement, especially after Otmar Szafnauer left his role as Aston Martin team principal.

He added: “He has the experience, he still has the speed, and above all he knows the Mercedes car - or the engine. I think the Aston Martin concept is very close.”

Hamilton’s future in the sport hangs in the balance on the outcome of the inquest into the title-deciding race which saw race director Michael Masi fail to apply the rules with regard to the safety car.

Merc boss Toto Wolff met the newly-elected FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem last week and said Hamilton is disillusioned by the outcome of the race which saw Verstappen win the title.

Merc are desperate to find out the outcome of the investigation before the 37-year-old decides if he wants to race on.

But a statement from the FIA said that the findings will not be presented until the opening day of the 2022 season in Bahrain - a total of THREE months after the race in Abu Dhabi.

Mercedes have posted a series of tweets of Hamilton - dubbed ‘Mr Mercedes’ - to hint their star driver will be joining winter testing at the end of February.

However, even former F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone reckoned Hamilton’s time was up because he is ready to explore other ventures.

Ecclestone said: “I don’t think he is coming back, I think he will not race next year.

“His disappointment in Abu Dhabi was too great, and I understand him.”

McLaren boss Zak Brown calls for stronger F1 leadership to avoid ‘pantomime’

img]

McLaren boss Zak Brown has called for stronger leadership in Formula One to reduce the power of bigger teams and prevent the pinnacle of motorsport from turning into a “pantomime.”

In a piece on the year ahead posted on the McLaren website on Monday, Brown said some rivals were seeking “excuses to raise the cost cap and win world championships with chequebooks” while also gaining an advantage with B teams.

Without naming names, the American said “at times it has seemed the sport is governed by certain teams” and more leadership was needed from Liberty Media-owned Formula One and the governing FIA.

The FIA last month elected a new president, Emirati Mohammed Ben Sulayem, in place of Frenchman Jean Todt, while Italian Stefano Domenicali took over last year as Formula One chief executive.

The 2021 season ended in uproar, with Mercedes accusing race director Michael Masi of robbing Lewis Hamilton of an eighth crown with a late change to the safety car procedure that favoured Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who took the title.

Both Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff and Red Bull’s Christian Horner spoke on the radio to Masi during the race and the Australian official’s future remains uncertain, with some maintaining that his position has become untenable.

Brown said the past had been characterised by “a mainly autocratic style of governance,” a reference to decades under former supremo Bernie Ecclestone, and a more consultative approach had been necessary to reset the sport.

“Moving forward there is a need to shift back to stronger, more directive leadership and governance at the top of the sport,” the American said.

“It is clear that some of the rules and their governance are not acceptable as things stand.”

Brown said the teams had contributed to inconsistencies in policing the regulations and had voted for many of the rules they now complained about.

He suggested the events of Abu Dhabi, subject to investigation by the governing body, resulted from systemic failures with “a seeming lack of preparation for the events unfolding and temporary inertia on the solutions.”

“It is the teams who applied the pressure to avoid finishing races under a safety car at all costs,” he added.

“It is the teams who have been using the broadcasting of radio messages to the race director to try to influence penalties and race outcomes, to the point where an over-excited team principal plays to the gallery and pressurises race officials.

“This has not been edifying for F1. At times it’s felt like a pantomime audition rather than the pinnacle of a global sport.”

Catch a Classic!

She suspects that Johnnie Aysgarth (Cary Grant), the playboy who swept into her life and married her, is a murderer, and that she is his next intended victim. Hitch combines romance, mystery and atmospheric flourishes (like an eerie, glowing glass of milk, an effect achieved with a lightbulb inside a glass) to wring all the suspense he can out of this terrific thriller. It is all enhanced by Fontaine’s vulnerable, nerve-wracked performance as Lina and Grant’s playing against type as Johnnie, who is clearly an imposing charmer, wastrel and cad. But is he also a killer? Like the glass that may or may not contain poison, Johnnie’s words and deeds may or may not be laced with subtle traces of menace.

MotoGP, Marquez and Hamilton: MotoGP and F1 set to start with stars at risk

img]

The MotoGP championship will start on March 6 from the Losail track in Qatar, while Formula 1 gets underway at Sakhir in Bahrain two weeks later. There is a possibility that both major motorsport series could kick off the 2022 season with an important absence, that of their main stars. The presence of Lewis Hamilton, in fact, is shrouded in mystery, while Marc at least seems on track to be at the start of the championship. Their situations are very different, but what does not change is that MotoGP and F1 risk not being able to count on their main ‘assets’ (as the economists say), that is, the two catalysts of global interest.

Both have dominated their respective sport in recent years and are the face of it. Lewis combines his own battles for social issues with the results on the track, Marc is only focused on racing, but they are undoubtedly charismatic characters who divide the audiences. Exactly what is needed for sports that are (or must be) more and more also a show.

Of course, their situations are very different. Marquez was betrayed again by … himself: a crash while he was training with an enduro bike. An accident that caused him a diplopia from which he is slowly recovering, according to what he told us yesterday. Hamilton felt betrayed by a world to which he had given so much in the final, unpredictable, Grand Prix that awarded the title to Max Verstappen.

So, in recent months, a lot has been written about them without them actually saying anything. Marc pared down his social media posts, just Christmas greetings, congratulations to Petrucci for his victory in the Dakar and some images of him resuming training (the last with a motocross bike). Lewis, on the other hand, has entrenched himself behind a deafening silence: his social media profiles have been inactive since 11 December, the day of qualifying for the last race, and he no longer follows anyone on his Instagram.

When the interesting people don’t talk, everyone else does. For Lewis, Bernie Ecclestone also threw in his tuppence worth, maintaining that we will not see him on the track in 2022, while the newly elected president of the FIA, Mohammed Bin Sulayem, threw water on the fire by saying that Hamilton never announced his retirement.

In typical F1 fashion, it’s a classic political case. The British champion feels offended and cheated out of a title that was taken out of his hands by the questionable decisions of the now infamous race director Masi, who makes MotoGP’s Freddie Spencer look like a two-wheeled Solomon. Then Lewis deserted the FIA party and now awaits the verdict on the promised investigation before the holidays, because the past cannot be changed, but the future can be assured.

For Marquez it is not that simple, because medicine does not allow political manoeuvring to fix things. In December Honda, in a statement, simply stated that it was necessary to wait to see how the diplopia developed, but ruled out surgery. Almost one month has gone by and it was only yesterday that Marc reappeared in public, with the other HRC riders (including those from SBK). Now before getting back on a MotoGP bike he will have to go through another important test, probably on the RC213V-S, to understand how his eye will respond at high speeds over the course of a whole day

For Honda, not having Marquez already from the winter tests would be a problem, because with a completely new bike to be developed, his contribution is fundamental. Even in terms of the championship, however, Marc is the keystone, considering that in the last four years no other rider of the official team has managed to win even one race.

MotoGP also needs him, after losing Valentino, because another season without Marquez would be another tough blow to the sport. Even if the #1 has not been on his fairing for two years, the rider from Cervara still represents the benchmark, the man with whom the new generations must shape up against. If the 2021 Formula 1 season was all about the Hamilton vs Verstappen clash, a remake in the world of two wheels would be a godsend to overcome the loss of the Doctor.

MotoGP cannot do without Marquez and the same can be said of Formula 1 with Hamilton, but the future of both men is shrouded in mystery, with the hope that everything will turn out for the best in the coming weeks.
