The Queen and Princess Anne’s long time horse racing friend, Ivor Herbert, dies aged 96
]
The Queen is mourning the loss of one of her close friends, Ivor Herbert, who has died at the age of 96.
Herbert, who was a respected horse racing journalist and trainer, died peacefully at his home according to an announcement in The Times.
The ex-Coldstream Guards officer was a friend of Her Majesty, and regularly visited the monarch at Balmoral to discuss all things horse racing.
He was also the journalist who collaborated with Princess Anne on her equestrian autobiography, Riding Through my Life.
A brief announcement in The Times read: “Herbert, Ivor died peacefully at home on the 5th of January, aged 96.
“Beloved father of Nick, Kate and Jane and grandfather to Joe. Private cremation. The details of a memorial service to follow.”
Herbert’s biggest career success was in 1957 when he trained Linwell to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
As an author, he wrote about some of horse racing’s greats including Arkle, Red Rum and trainer Vincent O’Brien.
He was also the person chosen by the Princess Royal to assist in the writing of her autobiography in which Her Royal Highness talks about her life with horses from childhood to the time of publication in 1991.
Ivor Herbert is the third friend of The Queen to die in the space of a month.
Only a few weeks ago, The Queen’s most trusted confidant, the Duchess of Grafton, died at the age of 101.
Also dying in late December was Her Majesty’s Lady of the Bedchamber, Diana, Lady Farnham, at the age of 90.
Speaking at the time, a royal source said: “It has not been a good year for the Queen – losing her husband and then the Duchess of Grafton and now Lady Farnham.
“They were dear friends who supported the Queen on official duties.”

When it comes to naming the new royal baby, it is traditional for there to be several historical and familial nods.
While the royal names of several of the Queen’s great-grandchildren have become less formal in the last decade, they still contain many sweet links to their royal background.
One common trend and a mark of respect is for several of the monarch’s relatives to be named after her in some way, shape or form. MyLondon has put together a guide on who shares their name with the longest reigning monarch in British history.

The Queen has four children, eight grandchildren and, as of early 2022, she has 12 great-grandchildren.
Incredibly, nine of the Queen’s descendants are named in honour of her, including Princess Charlotte, Princess Anne and Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor.
Of course, the name can also be attributed to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother or to Queen Elizabeth I.

Royals such as Princess Anne and Princess Charlotte have been given the Queen’s first name as a middle name.
The Princess Royal’s full name is Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise, whereas Princess Charlotte was christened as Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
Another royal who is surprisingly named after the Queen is Prince George. His full name is George Alexander Louis and is was later noticed that Alexander is the male version of the Queen’s own middle name of Alexandra.
The last unique link to the Queen’s name came when Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor’s birth was announced. Lilibet is the very famous term of endearment that was used by the Queen’s parents, sister and late husband.

But the Queen isn’t the only royal who has been frequently honoured in the names of their descendants.
Prince Philip was married to the Queen for 73 years before he died at the age of 99 on April 9, 2021.
The longest serving consort in British history has been remembered in the names of five of his male descendants.
These royals are: Prince Charles, Prince William, August Brooksbank, James, Viscount Severn and Lucas Tindall.
