Sinéad O’Connor was one of the most critically-acclaimed popstars of the 90s. The 55-year-old Irish singer-songwriter made her musical debut in 1987 with her album The Lion And The Cobra, and she quickly rose to fame with her 1990 sophomore effort I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, which included a chart-topping cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” After a controversial appearance on Saturday Night Live, which included her ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II, Sinéad faced serious backlash. Despite the controversy, she’s continued to release music, with her most recent album being 2014’s I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss, and she’s anticipated to drop what she described as her final album No Veteran Dies Alone in 2022.

Throughout her life, Sinéad had been married four times and has had four children. The singer sadly shared that her third child Shane had died by suicide at age 17 in a January 17 tweet. “My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God,” she wrote. Jake Reynolds

Sinéad’s first marriage was to record producer John Reynolds who produced her debut album. The singer gave birth to her oldest son Jake Reynolds, 34, in June 1987. While Sinéad and John’s marriage didn’t work out, the pair have continued to collaborate on a number of albums since the 1991 divorce, including Sinéad’s 2014 record. Jake has a child of his own, making Sinéad a grandmother. She announced her son’s child’s birth in a 2015 Facebook post, per Independent.ie. “This for Lia and Jake and their little angel, who flew about with me in Vegas last week as I was singing the Foggy Dew,” she wrote.

While Jake has mostly stayed out of the spotlight, his mom made a few since-deleted public Facebook posts about him regarding a custody battle in May 2016, via NBC News. The mother and son appeared to have an occasionally tumultuous relationship. “Jake, kindly go to the court on Tuesday and take custody your brother from [Irish Child and Family Agency] Tusla,” she wrote. “Do not abandon your brother or any other of my babies again. What you have done to your brother and your mother is LITERALLY criminal.”

After Jake was born, Sinéad opened up about having an abortion in a 1991 interview with Spin. She admitted that the song “My Special Child” was about the experience. She admitted that even though she wanted a second child, the baby’s father seemed absent. “We were fighting. I was on tour, and I was feeling sick all the time. I didn’t know what to do, and he wasn’t really interested in the child. So I was left with the decision of whether or not to have the child, knowing that the father wasn’t going to be around,” she told Spin. “I decided that it was better not to and that I would have a child at a later stage when his father would be around and involved. I didn’t feel that I could handle it by myself.”

After her marriage to her first husband ended, Sinéad started seeing Irish journalist John Waters, and the pair had a daughter Roison, 25, in March 1995. Sinéad and John had a long custody battle over their daughter, which led to the singer attempting to commit suicide in 1999, according to Biography.

Shane Lunny

After a brief marriage to writer Nick Sommerlad from 2001 to 2004, Sinéad had her third child Shane with Irish folk singer Donal Lunny. Shane was found dead at age 17 two days after he had gone missing on January 6, 2022, via The Guardian. The singer mourned her son’s death in a series of now-deleted tweets. After an alarming thread, Sinéad wrote in a since-deleted tweet that she was being taken to a hospital for care following Shane’s death, via The New York Post.

After the troubling tweets, “The Emperor’s New Clothes” singer apologized to fans for the shocking tweets, and she continued to mourn her son’s death. “I’m very upset. My son was the love of my life. I am sorry I’ve upset tusla and just about every other human being on earth also. I am ruined without my son. I am sorry I’ve upset anyone,” she wrote.

Yeshua Bonadio

Sinéad had her youngest son Yeshua, 15, with Frank Bonadio in 2006. Not much is known about her youngest child, but the singer is clearly a doting mother. She posted a photo of the boy congratulating him for coming in first place for a Halloween cake-decorating competition in October 2019, per Mirror.

Sinéad O’Connor calls out ‘evil’ Irish state and hospital after teenage son’s death

Sinéad O’Connor has condemned the Irish state after the death of her 17-year-old son, Shane.

The singer announced the news of her teenage son’s death on Twitter in the early hours of 8 January, writing: “My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God.

“May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.”

Shane had been reported missing two days before his death. O’Connor had previously said Shane was “on suicide watch” at the Tallaght Hospital in Dublin.

In a new series of tweets on the evening of 8 January, O’Connor has fiercely criticised the Irish health service HSE, the child and family agency Tusla and the Irish state overall.

“26 hours after my son died in the so called care of the Irish State in the form of Tusla, I have yet to receive any contact from Tusla or their representatives. I was informed by Gardai of my son’s death and later I spoke with the GAL [guardian ad litem, a court-appointed guardian who represents the best interests of a child]. No contact from Tusla is unacceptable,” she wrote in her first tweet.

O’Connor later posted: “I have now formally identified the remains of my son, Shane. May God forgive the Irish State for I never will.”

The “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer added: “Now tusla want to discuss with me ‘a media release’ no doubt wishing to have me join in their efforts to make this death of my child seem like it wasn’t at the hands of the Irish State.”

Sinead O’Connor Admitted To Hospital Following Son’s Tragic Death

Singer Sinead O’Connor has been admitted to hospital following the tragic death of her 17-year-old son, Shane.

Shane went missing earlier this month and was found dead on January 7, after which O’Connor announced the loss of her son on Twitter.

The mother, who changed her name to Shuhada Davitt in 2018, described the teenager as the ‘very light of [her] life’, explaining that he ‘decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God.’

She added: ‘May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.’

Last night, January 13, O’Connor shared a post on Twitter in which she said her son’s death was ‘no one’s fault but [her] own’. She indicated that she was considering taking her own life before later apologising for her post.

Addressing her followers, O’Connor wrote: ‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. I am with cops now on way to hospital. I’m sorry I upset everyone. I am lost without my kid and I hate myself. Hospital will help a while. But I’m going to find Shane. This is just a delay.’

The singer’s admission to hospital comes after she reportedly threatened a hospital with a lawsuit and accused those who were in charge of looking after Shane of failing to do so appropriately.

Per The Mirror, she explained the teenager had been taken to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services after ‘vanishing [and] leaving suicide notes including detailed funeral plans’.

In a post on Twitter, she continued: ‘They discharged him. Said he had no plans. When objections were raised by the adult with him she was told “planning a funeral is no different to planning a wedding”.’

O’Connor later shared details of her son’s funeral, explaining she will follow the requests he had laid out prior to his death. His funeral will be attended by just his mother and father, with O’Connor noting: ‘This was also the wish Shane expressed in his suicide notes.’

Though the funeral will be a small one, O’Connor told fans they could send flowers or other items in tribute to Shane to ‘the mortuary at Loughlinstown hospital.’

Locals in Tullamore are reeling in shock this morning after the horror murder of a young teacher in broad daylight on Wednesday.

Ashling Murphy was killed in what was believed to be a “stranger murder” at 4pm along the canal banks.

Elsewhere, Ireland’s Covid rules change tonight with isolation periods shortened and a considerable change in close contact rules.

Here’s all you need to know;

Offaly victim named

A teacher was randomly attacked and murdered while out jogging along a canal.

Ashling Murphy, 23, was running along the canal bank in Tullamore, Co Offaly, at around 4pm on Wednesday when she was set upon.

Gardai arrested a man in his 40s within walking distance of the crime scene.

Detectives have not been able to establish any link between Ms Murphy and her killer. A source said last night: “It looks like a stranger murder.”

Talented trad musician Ashling, from Blue Ball and who taught at Durrow National School, was exercising along the recreational route between Boland’s Lock and Digby Bridge, Cappincur.

The crime scene and the surrounding area of the Cappincur/Canal walk area was cordoned off by gardai and officers believe some locals may have witnessed the horrific killing.
