Constance Towers Returns to General Hospital Again as Helena Cassadine for Luke Spencer’s Memorial

Last December, General Hospital’s Constance Towers was spotted at the ABC studios to tape some scenes and we were happy to see her return once again to reprise her role as Helena Cassadine in the Friday, January 21, episode surrounding Luke’s memorial.

The Port Charles character was last seen back-from-the-dead in February 2020. Fans will recall that it wasn’t long after Valentin had learned he wasn’t a Cassadine, as test results proved he and Alexis didn’t share any DNA, when Helena appeared in a vision. While he looked at his Cassadine ring, Valentin demanded that Helena divulge how she pulled off such a heinous lie.

Helena admitted that Mikkos believed he was his son, therefore she passed Valentin off as a Cassadine. When Valentin realized that Helena had placed the codicil in the portrait as a way to test Nikolas, and that she used Charlotte as a means to have a connection to Luke’s genetic line, in a fury, he smashed a bottle against the wall and Helena vanished…

Though the character’s latest reappearance was all about her past with Luke, considering that not too long ago Victor revealed that Valentin was his son, which in turn made him a Cassadine by blood, Helena could very well return again to address past details from that storyline. And given that Nikolas and Spencer aren’t on the best of terms, she could very well find a way to get intertwined into that inner-family mess too!

Whatever the case, Helena never reappears without a reason — and we’re here for whenever that reoccurs again in the future. Take a look back in time as we revisit some of her wickedest moments in Port Charles.

How ‘General Hospital’ Said Goodbye to the Iconic Luke Spencer

Early this year, “General Hospital” killed off Luke Spencer, the iconic character who was played by Anthony Geary on and off for decades. Luke’s current wife Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) turned up at the door of his ex-wife Laura (Genie Francis) — whose coupledom with Luke sent “General Hospital” to its stratospheric heights in the early 1980s — to tell her the tragic news. Luke had been killed, under mysterious circumstances, of course, in a cable-car accident in Austria.

On Friday, the show memorialized Luke, with his old friends gathering to celebrate him on the Haunted Star (if you know, you know).

Frank Valentini, the executive producer of “General Hospital,” isn’t doing interviews about why he decided to kill off Luke now, especially since Geary, who is 74, hasn’t been on the show since a guest appearance in 2017. But Luke’s death has indeed provided a rich storytelling opportunity, first as Luke’s friends — and Geary’s old castmates — learned of his death, and then on Friday’s episode as they mourned him. “General Hospital” has a significant number of cast members from Geary’s era who continue to regularly appear on the show, such as Francis (now the mayor of Port Charles!), Tristan Rogers (Robert Scorpio, super spy) and Jacklyn Zeman (Bobbie, Luke’s sister, whom he always affectionately called Barbara Jean).

Geary’s Luke was a truly significant character in the history of soap operas, and all of television. He joined “General Hospital” in 1978 as a villain, who would soon rape Laura — an assault that turned into a romance, which was a hideously common trope in daytime dramas at the time. (The show and the characters reckoned with the rape in a mid-2000s plot.)

Luke and Laura would prove to be a game-changing couple both for “General Hospital,” and all of pop culture, with their banter and modern sensibilities that attracted a young audience. Their two-part November 1981 wedding brought in Elizabeth Taylor as the evil Helena Cassadine — along with an audience of 30 million viewers.

“General Hospital” being what it is, even more than a generation later, surely the Cassadines — the ones who remain diabolical — are behind Luke’s death. Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy) had to be asked to leave Luke’s funeral, and then the late Helena herself (as played by Constance Towers) appeared via video message from beyond the grave, gloating. Even the Ice Princess, the diamond that’s a sacred object in “General Hospital” lore was mentioned — though not seen, much to the chagrin of Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Chavez), who stared after the closed box held by Tracy covetously.

In the episode’s final moments, Laura blew a kiss at Luke’s picture, saying, “Goodbye, my love.”

Airline CEOs Warn of Unprecedented ‘Chaos’ Tied to This Week’s 5G Rollout

For weeks, airlines have been cautioning authorities over the delays and disruptions that would happen in the wake of telco companies’ planned rollout of 5G technology, and things are getting serious. On Monday, the CEOs of several transportation giants like Delta, JetBlue, and American Airlines warned transportation officials that “tens of thousands” of Americans risked being stranded by grounded flights if AT&T and Verizon move forward with their planned 5G deployment this week.

That warning, which was first obtained by NBC News, was addressed to National Economic Council Director Brian Deese, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Stephen Dickson, and Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. Buttigieg and Dickson have sided with airlines in the past, with the duo requesting delays to the 5G deployment at the start of this year. Said rollout has already been delayed multiple times over concerns from the FAA and others that the tech could potentially interfere with the automated cockpit systems that aircraft use while landing. Telecom companies, meanwhile, have argued that some of these fears might be overblown—but that didn’t stop AT&T and Verizon from pausing their planned rollout by about two weeks earlier this month.

We’ve passed that grace period now and telecom’s “C-band” 5G service is planned to be deployed across the country on Wednesday. Naturally, airlines are still terrified. “Immediate intervention is needed to avoid significant operational disruption to air passengers, shippers, supply chain and delivery of needed medical supplies,” the letter reads. It goes on to note that the planned 5G deployment on January 19th is “substantially worse” than the airline industry anticipated for two main reasons.

First, even though the FAA cleared about 45% of airlines to perform low-visibility landings at 50 large airports where 5G is planned to be deployed, 55% of all aircraft still aren’t cleared to fly in these zones. The letter points out that would inevitably lead to tens of thousands of passengers suffering delayed or canceled flights at a time when passengers are already dealing with enough of those issues already.

And second, because 5G tech is suspected to render these aircraft unable to communicate with radio altimeters on the ground, “multiple modern safety systems” onboard these crafts will be deemed “unusable,” the letter noted.

“Airplane manufacturers have informed us that there are huge swaths of the operating fleet that may need to be indefinitely grounded,” it added. Not only would this cause chaos domestically, but this could potentially leave countless Americans stranded overseas. The solution airline leaders proposed in this new letter was a pretty simple one: allow 5G to be deployed nationwide starting Wednesday, with the exception of within two miles of major airport runways.

Both AT&T and Verizon had previously agreed to maintain temporary buffer zones at 50 airports for half a year after that initial deployment, where the companies each agreed to turn off their transmitters in order to, as the FAA put it, “minimize potential 5G interference with sensitive aircraft instruments used in low-visibility landings.”

Not long after the airline CEO’s letter was sent, AT&T announced it would be hitting pause on its plans to deploy 5G service near some of these airports while it continued to smooth things over with aviation regulators. While it didn’t say precisely which airports would be hit with the delay, a spokesperson told the New York Times that the company is “launching [its] advanced 5G services everywhere else as planned with the temporary exception of this limited number of towers.”

AT&T also said what many people are thinking when it expressed its frustration at “the FAA’s inability to do what nearly 40 countries have done, which is to safely deploy 5G technology without disrupting aviation services, and we urge it do so in a timely manner.” Everyone knew this was coming well ahead of time.

Verizon offered a similar sentiment. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and our nation’s airlines have not been able to fully resolve navigating 5G around airports, despite it being safe and fully operational in more than 40 other countries,” Verizon told Gizmodo in a statement. It added that it, too, had “voluntarily decided to limit [its] 5G network around airports.”

Needless to say, it looks like the “encouraging” talks between transport and telco heads that Buttigieg previously mentioned might not be so encouraging after all.
