Nick Bosa among 3 49ers questionable vs. Packers

The good news for the 49ers is their injury report for Saturday’s divisional-round matchup against the Packers didn’t feature any players who were officially ruled out.

The bad news is three players, including defensive end Nick Bosa, are officially questionable to suit up in Green Bay.

Nick Bosa Makes His Opinion On Jimmy Garoppolo Very Clear

Many have wondered if Jimmy Garoppolo is the right man to lead the San Francisco 49ers at the quarterback position.

After all, the 49ers drafted quarterback Trey Lance near the top of the 2021 NFL Draft. Several fans have been calling for Lance to take over.

While that could still happen next season, this is Jimmy Garoppolo’s team for now. And that team is heading to the NFC Championship Game.

49ers star Nick Bosa made his opinion on Jimmy G. extremely clear following Saturday night’s upset win in Green Bay.

“Honestly I’m impressed with his demeanor as a leader. A lot of people give him crap for whatever but he’s as cool and collected as as a quarterback that I’ve ever had and he is the perfect guy to lead us to where we need to go,” Nick Bosa said.

The 49ers are off to the NFC Championship Game, where they will face either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the Green Bay Packers.

Aaron Rodgers, meanwhile, is heading home early.

Ambry Thomas OUT; Jimmy G, Nick Bosa Active vs. Packers

GREEN BAY, WI – Despite coming off of a physical matchup in Sunday’s Wild Card matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, the San Francisco 49ers are near full-strength heading into their Divisional Round contest against the Green Bay Packers.

However, for San Francisco, they will be without their starting rookie cornerback. Ambry Thomas landed on the injury report this week after dealing with a knee injury during Sunday’s Wild Card matchup. Thomas allowed just two catches on four targets for 24 yards and also notched a pass breakup against the Cowboys high-scoring offense. The 49ers have seen the rookie continue to improve over his last six games. Following a mediocre first two starts, Thomas has given up only 8-of-16 targets for 111 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for an 86.2 passer rating allowed (76.5 PFF coverage grade) over his last four games – a stark improvement.

With the rookie out, the 49ers are likely to look to Josh Norman and Dontae Johnson to get the start in his absence.

Heading into the game, the 49ers had three players who were designated as questionable entering the weekend, including pass rusher Nick Bosa. On Friday, Bosa was cleared from the concussion protocol and is set to play on Saturday.

Of note, defensive lineman Jordan Willis left last week’s game in the first half with an ankle injury and did not return. It was assumed the pass rusher suffered a high-ankle sprain, however, fortunately for San Francisco, Willis was able to return to the field this week and is active.

As for Jimmy Garoppolo, the quarterback was not on the injury report heading into the weekend, meaning he’s full go for Saturday’s game. While already dealing with a previously sustained thumb injury, he attempted to avoid landing on his hand and instead fell on his elbow and “jammed the shoulder up” against Dallas. Despite not playing at “100 percent,” Garoppolo said he is “feeling good” enough to play against the Packers.

As for Green Bay, the team activated outside linebackers Whitney Mercilus and Za’Darius Smith from Injured Reserve and both are expected to play. Mercilus has missed the last seven weeks after suffering a torn bicep in Week 10. Meanwhile, Smith was not on hand in the Packers first meeting in San Francisco as he appeared in just one game for Green Bay while working through a lingering back injury.

It’s worth noting, Packers All-Pro tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) has offically been ruled OUT.

49ers injury report: Nick Bosa ’looking good’ to face Packers

SANTA CLARA – Even after it was revealed Monday 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo sustained a right shoulder sprain to go with his right thumb injury, it seemed to be a given he would remain in the lineup.

The 49ers made it official on Thursday, as Garoppolo was listed with no injury designation on the team’s final status report before traveling to Green Bay for the team’s NFC divisional-round playoff game against the Packers.

“He’s thrown the ball great, and he looks as good as he did the week before,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said.

Defensive end Nick Bosa took part in warmups with his teammates on Thursday for the second day in a row, a sign he is advancing through the NFL’s return-to-play concussion protocol. He was listed as “questionable” on the official injury report.

“You got to put him on there (the injury report) because of the steps of the protocol,” Shanahan said. “But it’s looking good.”

Bosa sustained a concussion late in the first half of the 49ers’ wild-card round playoff victory over the Dallas Cowboys and did not play in the second half.

Starting cornerback Ambry Thomas is also listed as questionable with a knee contusion. Shanahan said if Thomas is unable to play, either Dontae Johnson or Josh Norman would get the call.

“I’m hoping he’ll go,” Shanahan said of Thomas. “That’s why we got him as questionable. I think he’ll be all right, but that’ll come down to seeing how he is on game day.”

Garoppolo was less effective in the second half on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys after sustaining a right shoulder sprain.

In the first half, Garoppolo completed 11 of 14 pass attempts for 133 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions as the 49ers built a 16-9 lead at halftime. In the second half, Garoppolo completed just 5 of 11 attempts for 33 yards with one interception.

The 49ers held on for a 23-17 win over Dallas that sets up their showdown with the Packers at Lambeau Field on Saturday night.

49ers injury report

Questionable: DL Nick Bosa (concussion), CB Ambry Thomas (knee), DL Jordan Willis (ankle)

Packers injury report

Doubtful: WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling (back)

Questionable: CB Jaire Alexander (shoulder), T David Bakhtiari (knee)

The Packers on Thursday activated receiver Randall Cobb off injured reserve to be available to face the 49ers. Edge rushers Za’Darius Smith (back) and Whitney Mercilus (biceps) could be brought off IR on Friday to be eligible to play.
