LYON, France – French actor Gaspard Ulliel, known for appearing in Chanel perfume ads as well as film and television roles, died Wednesday after a skiing accident in the Alps, according to his agent’s office. He was 37.Ulliel portrayed the young Hannibal Lecter in 2007’s “Hannibal Rising” and fashion mogul Yves Saint Laurent in the 2014 biopic “Saint Laurent.” He is also in the upcoming Marvel series “Moon Knight,” and was the advertising face of the Chanel men’s fragrance Bleu de Chanel.Ulliel was hospitalized Tuesday after the accident in the Savoie region’s Rosiere ski area, the Savoie prosecutor’s office said. The office of the actor’s agent said Ulliel died on Wednesday. It provided no details.Local broadcaster France Bleu said he was hospitalized with a skull injury, and that he apparently collided with another skier at a crossing point on the slopes. The other skier was not hospitalized, according to France Bleu. Police and prosecutors would not discuss details of the accident.The mountain police service serving the site of the accident said it has been leading five or six rescues per day in recent days as the snow has hardened.In the neighboring Haute-Savoie region, a 5-year-old girl was killed Saturday when a skier crashed into her. The man was handed preliminary manslaughter charges, according to the Haute-Savoie prosecutor, who cited excessive speed as the likely reason for the accident.

Gaspard Ulliel, an award-winning French actor who starred in the acclaimed film A Very Long Engagement and the prequel Hannibal Rising, has died after a skiing accident, reports The Guardian.

The actor, who will appear in the upcoming Disney+ Marvel show Moon Knight was 37.

Quoting French media outlet France Bleu, the Guardian noted Ulliel collided with another skier in the Alps, but later died of head trauma after being airlifted to a hospital.

The actor was a favorite among voters for the Cesar, the French film equivalent of the Oscars, first winning a Promising Young Actor trophy for his role in 2004’s A Very Long Engagement, and later its Best Actor prize for the 2016 Xavier Dolan film It’s Only the End of the World.

Ulliel’s passing was mourned on Twitter by France’s Prime Minister Jean Castex, who said the actor, “grew up with cinema and cinema grew with him.”

Ulliel, who will appear as Midnight Man opposite Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke in Moon Knight, leaves behind a 6-year-old son Orso with his model and singer girlfriend Gaëlle Piétri.

Gaspard Ulliel, who played a young Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal Rising and starred opposite Audrey Tatou in A Very Long Engagement has died in a ski accident at age 37, according to authorities in Albertville, France. Ulliel also played Yves Saint Laurent in a 2007 biopic about the fashion icon and stars in the upcoming Marvel film Moon Knight.

Ulliel collided with another skier at a resort in the French Alps, officials said. He was transported to a hospital in Grenoble where he died from his injuries. The other skier was not hospitalized.

Ulliel began acting at age 12. He won two Cesars, France’s equivalent to the Oscars. In 2005 he won the Most Promising Actor Cesar for A Very Long Engagement. Twelve years later he won the Best Actor Cesar for Juste La Fin Du Monde (It’s Only The End of the World), opposite Marion Cotillard and Lea Seydoux. He also worked as a model.

In 2010, Ulliel played a famous French director in a commercial for Chanel that was directed by Martin Scorsese. The part wasn’t just fantasy. In 2011, he told Anthem Magazine he hoped to direct one day. “I wake up every morning with this idea stuck in my mind that I want to write and direct my own film one day. As I work more and more on different sets, I see how hard it is to be a director. It’s insane the amount of work and confidence that goes into it. I’m so respectful of filmmakers and I admire what they do. I hope that one day I’ll find the right subject and the confidence to try it. I’m still young.”

Xavier Dolan, who directed Ulliel in Juste La Fin Du Monde called the actor’s death “unimaginable” and “so painful.” On Instagram, Dolan praised the actor for his “attentive eye” and “listening.”

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire writes on Twitter, the French film industry has lost “a huge talent, full of charm and energy.”

Ulliel gained international attention for his performance as the famous cannibal in Hannibal Rising and had a leading role in the upcoming Marvel TV series Moon Knight.

His family confirmed the death in a statement given to AFP by his agent.

Ulliel won a César – the French equivalent of an Oscar – for best actor in 2017 for It’s Only the End of the World in which he starred alongside Marion Cotillard and Lea Seydoux.

He had already taken home a Cesar in 2004 for most promising actor after appearing in the World War I drama A Very Long Engagement alongside Audrey Tautou.

He starred in Saint Laurent, one of two biopics about the legendary designer to be released in 2014, though he lost out at the Cesars to the star of the rival film, Pierre Niney.

French actor Gaspard Ulliel has died following a skiing accident in the Alps, aged 37.

The accident, which occurred on Tuesday (18 January), took place in the Savoie region of the Alps, and an investigation into what happened is currently underway.

Following news of the accident, broadcaster France Bleu reported that the actor was in “serious condition”.

The mountain police service serving the site of the accident said it has been organising five or six rescues per day in recent weeks as the snow has hardened.

Ulliel was known for films including Saint Laurent (2014), in which he played fashion designed Yves Saint Lauren, and for playing a young Hannibal Lecter in 2007 film Hannibal Rising.

In 2016, he appeared in Canadian director Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only the End of the World.

Ulliel was also known as the male face of Bleu de Chanel, and had recently completed work on the forthcoming Marvel series Moon Knight alongside Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke.

Working in both English and French films, he worked with acclaimed directors such as Xavier Dolan and Gus Van Sant.

Ulliel received praise in France for his performances in Summer Things and Strayed respectively both of which saw him earn nominations for Most Promising Actor at the César Awards.

He later won the award for his performance in A Very Long Engagement, which he starred in alongside Marion Cotillard, Audrey Tatou and Jodie Foster.
