The investigation points to a surprising suspect in the betrayal of the Anne Frank family

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – An investigation reopened six years ago into the betrayal of the Anne Frank family has revealed a surprising suspect: the whistleblower responsible for urging the Nazis to find her and other Jews in a canal-side bunker in Amsterdam in 1944.
Anne and the other Jews were found by the Nazis on August 4 of that year after the group had been in hiding for two years. They were deported and Anne died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the age of 15.
A team that includes retired FBI agent Vincent Bangkok and about 20 historians, criminologists and relatively unknown personal data experts has identified Jewish notary Arnold van den Berg as the prime suspect in uncovering the cache.
Some other experts emphasized that the evidence was inconclusive.
Investigative team member Peter van Tuysek said the main evidence in the case is an unsigned note addressed to Otto Anne’s father, found in an old dossier on the post-war investigation, which specifically cites van den Berg and claims he provided the information to the Nazis.
The note claims that van den Berg had access to the addresses of Jewish bunkers as a member of the Jewish Council in Amsterdam, who worked during the war. The notary was passing this information to the Nazis to save his family.
Investigators asserted that Otto, the only family member to survive the war, was aware of the memo but chose not to speak about it publicly.
Twisk speculates that Otto may have decided to remain silent about the episode because he did not know whether the accusation was true, did not want to reveal information that could further encourage anti-Semitism, or did not want Van den Berg’s three daughters to do so. To be blamed for something their father did. He could have done.
“Otto was at Auschwitz,” Toissek said. “He knew that people in difficult situations sometimes do things that might not be morally justified.”
Although other members of the Jewish Council in Amsterdam were deported, van den Berg was able to remain in the Netherlands. He died in 1950.
Historian Eric Sommers of the Dutch NIOD Institute for the Studies of War, Holocaust and Genocide praised the extensive investigation but questioned its conclusion.
He questioned the centrality of the anonymous memo to van den Berg’s arguments about responsibility and said that the investigative team made assumptions about Jewish institutions in Amsterdam in wartime that are not supported by other historical investigations.
According to Summers, there are many possible reasons why van den Berg was never deported, as he “was a very influential man”.
Mibe Jess, one of the people who helped the Frank family, kept Anne’s diary safe until Otto’s return. It was first published in 1947. Since then, it has been translated into 60 languages and has captured the imagination of millions of readers around the world.
The Anne Frank House Foundation was not involved in investigating the case, but it did share information from its files with investigators.
The findings of the new research will be published in a book by Canadian writer Rosemary Sullivan, “The Betrayal of Anne Frank,” which will be released on Tuesday.

Liverpool available squad numbers and new signings who can fill them in 2022

Liverpool look set for an exciting 2022.
Still alive in all four competitions, Jurgen Klopp’s men looked prime to compete on the pitch, and hopefully off the pitch next summer.
Klopp will know he’ll need to invest wisely if his side are to continue to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea in the Premier League.
The German manager has stated that he’s happy with his current squad, but it remains to be seen what moves Liverpool will make this summer.

With that being said, here a couple of squad numbers currently available at Liverpool - along with squad numbers that may come available - and who could fill them.
Number 2
Previously worn by Nathaniel Clyne, the number two jersey has been available for two years.
It’s a number which a few players could realistically move to. Fabinho had previously worn the number at Monaco, but chose to take the available no.3 jersey - which he continues to don.
One potential signing who could choose the number is Borussia Monchengladbach Denis Zakaria. Liverpool have struggled to find competition for Fabinho at the defensive midfield position, and could bring in Zakaria on a free transfer this summer.
It was thought that Alexander-Arnold would take the no.2 jersey once Clyne left the club. However, he has spoken of wanting to keep no.66 and make it his own.
Elsewhere, returning defender Sepp van den Berg could also take the number, after making a big leap this season whilst on loan at Preston - where he wears the number.
Candidates: Denis Zakaria, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Sepp van den Berg
Number 16
It’s been almost five years since anyone wore the number 16 for Liverpool in the Premier League, with Marko Grujic being the last.
After leaving the club this past summer, the jersey is now available to be taken.
And whilst an incoming could take this number, for now we’ll stick with two players already in the squad.
Harvey Elliott being the most likely. The 18-year-old looks to have cemented his spot in the first-team now, starting games against Chelsea and Leeds United in the Premier League before suffering a dislocated ankle.
Elliott had worn and thrived in the number 16 jersey for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship last season - scoring seven goals and adding 11 assists.
Tyler Morton could also be given a higher jersey number, after being elevated to the first-team he has performed admirably.
Candidates: Harvey Elliott, Tyler Morton
Numbers that will likely come available
Number 7
James Milner could leave Liverpool this summer with his contract set to expire.
It’s one of the most popular numbers at any football club, with previous legends Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish and Luis Suarez donning the number.
Liverpool have been linked with Kylian Mbappe for years now, with the Frenchman expected to leave PSG for free when his contract expires this summer. However, he is expected to join Real Madrid.
Another player who has been strongly linked to Liverpool is Leicester City’s Harvey Barnes. Klopp is an admirer of the player, who could be targeted this summer.
Finally, Harvey Elliott could be promoted to the number.
The teenager had started games at the beginning of the season, and looks set to be a first-team regular moving forward.
Candidates: Kylian Mbappe, Harvey Barnes, Harvey Elliott
Number 22
Jude Bellingham has worn number 22 since he was 13 years old. The number 22 jersey is set to become available this summer.
Currently, Loris Karius has been given the number, whilst continuing to train with the team. He is set to become a free agent and leave the club this summer.
Kaide Gordon could also be a candidate, having been elevated to train with the first-team and scoring a goal in the FA Cup.
Finally, the number 22 has traditionally been worn by goalkeepers in the past.
Young Brazilian Marcelo Pitaluga has seemingly been elevated to the first-team and has the fourth-choice goalkeeper spot behind Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher and Adrian, and could take the available jersey.
Candidates:Jude Bellingham, Kaide Gordon, Marcelo Pitaluga

In an interview with Ellen, Jordan said, “My mom and my dad, they had a home-catering business [when I was] growing up. So, as soon as I was old enough to see over the counter, they had me to work just prepping and helping and stuff like that.” And he was not initially interested in acting as a kid. He explained to Blackfilm.com, “I started off modeling. I was modeling for local companies like Model’s and little department stores here and there. My manager asked me if I wanted to try something new, like acting. I said, ‘Sure, why not?’ I was around 10 or 11 at the time. I went on a couple of auditions. I went for about a year and a half with no call backs, no jobs, not anything. ‘Maybe I’m just not cut out for this,’ I said to my mom. I thought about sticking with modeling and working. On the last audition I had, I got a call back and went on another audition, and got the job.”
