For the first time in franchise history, the Emmy-winning The Amazing Race was suspended mid-race when the world shut down because of the pandemic. In this episode, the teams are brought back 19 months later to continue the run, and in this episode, we will likely learn what kept some teams from returning and who’s invited back for the next leg, which kicks off in scenic Switzerland.
Go where no cinematographers are typically allowed in the second season of Nature’s inventive escapade in which custom-fitted cameras are attached to animals, taking us to realms we would otherwise never get to see as they interact in their natural habitat. The first of two episodes, “Oceans,” goes underwater with nesting female turtles, elephant seal pups frolicking in the ocean and tiger sharks diving hundreds of feet into the deep. A second episode, set in Australia, airs Jan. 26.

HGTV: Home Inspector Joe at 9p
PBS: Anmals With Cameras: A Nature Miniseries at 8p IN THE NEWS YouTube is winding down its original programming business, electing to focus on creator-driven content and live shoppable programs. Susanne Daniels, global head of original content at the platform for six years, is exiting and YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl was quick to follow the news with confirmation that the company will focus on initiatives including Creator Shorts Fund, Black Voices Fund and Live Shopping, with just two areas of YT originals continuing forth. Daniels initially took the video-sharing platform into the SVOD space with premium originals including “Cobra Kai” and “Step Up,” then led the transition to its ad-supported model and helped grow the creator economy. “Today, there are over 2M creators in the YouTube Partner Program and our creator community has never been more successful: we’ve paid more than $30B to creators, artists, and media companies over the last three years,” Kyncl wrote in a letter to creators yesterday. Let the games begin. Microsoft is acquiring Activision Blizzard in an all-cash, $68.7 billion deal that will have ramifications across the video game sector. The largest transaction in Microsoft’s history will ascend the company to the No. 3 spot among global video game companies by revenue, behind only Tencent and Sony. Warcraft, Diablo, Call of Duty and Candy Crush are among the games in Activision Blizzard’s various ranks, and the company also runs eSports ventures via its Major League Gaming division. The 64th annual Grammy Awards are taking a new gamble. The awards, which postponed its original January date in LA due to the rise of Covid’s Omicron variant, will now take place Sunday, April 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Hosted by Trevor Noah, the ceremony will air live on CBS and Paramount+ at 8p. Details about official Grammy Week events are to come. CBS is shuffling its Sunday primetime slate next week so it can air the first of two parts of the “NCIS: Hawaii” two-part episode after its coverage of the AFC Divisional Playoff Game between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs. Roku is getting weirder. Daniel Radcliffe is onboard to play musician “Weird Al” Yankovic—who rules as the top-selling comedy recording of all time—in “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” a biopic from Funny or Die and Tango that will stream exclusively on The Roku Channel. The feature, which promises to delve deep into the Yankovic backstory, was penned by Yankovic and Eric Appel with Appel slated to direct. Netflix scored 52 nominations to lead the pack for this year’s 53rd NAACP Awards, which will be hosted by Anthony Anderson and air Saturday, February 26 at 8p on BET.
HBO’s “Insecure” received the most nominations in the television + streaming categories; .H.E.R. is top-nominated in the music recording categories; and RCA Records scored the most noms across record labels. A commitment to develop a pipeline of diverse documentary filmmakers and include more diverse perspectives in salient production roles are among the diversity initiatives PBS announced during yesterdays’ Television Critics Assn. tour. Among specific moves, the broadcaster is in a new partnership with nonprofit Firelight Media, through which it is committing $3.6 million over three years to support mid-career nonfiction filmmakers through the organization’s William Greaves Fund. HBO Max announced the call for submissions for its annual Asian Pacific American Visionaries short film competition, established in 2016 and formerly known as the HBO APA Visionaries Short Film Competition. Disney+ Marvel series “Loki” landed four Visual Effects Society nominations, leading all broadcast series in the run for the 20th annual awards. ‘Hernán’ Co-Creator Francisco ‘Curro’ Royo Signs With The Gersh Agency (EXCLUSIVE)
]
“Hernan” co-creator and lead writer Francisco “Curro” Royo, one of the premier show runners in Spain and the Spanish-speaking world, has signed with The Gersh Agency and set up his own production company, Dystopia Media.
Royo will be represented at Gersh Agency by partner Roy Ashton and Shan Ray.
More from Variety
Already readying its first slate of projects in development, Dystopia Media, which will be based out of Madrid, underscores the growing market muscle and ambition of Spain’s foremost screenwriters.
“The next step is for writers and show runners to become producers,” said Royo, pointing to the example of Spain’s Alex Pina and Ramón Campos.
“Money Heist” co-creator Pina set up his own label Vancouver Media in 2016, going on to co-produce “Money Heist” and sign an overall deal with Netflix in 2018.
Established by “Velvet” and “Cable Girls” creator Ramón Campos and producer Teresa Fernández-Valdés in 2007, Bambu Producciones has grown into one of the biggest TV producers in Spain.
Dystopia Media, which has already attracted private-sector investment, will focus on project development, addressing one of the biggest challenges currently facing international production, Royo told Variety.
The company launches as fast-growing OTT platforms are driving a huge demand for new series.
“Now is the time for content, and development is key,” said Royo, arguing that a lot of development is being stopped because producers don’t have enough money to pay for pilots or need to raise more financing.
Dystopia Media can count on “connections to produce,” Royo added.
Signing with Hollywood and New York-based The Gersh Agency, the sixth largest in the U.S., is “a way to open up new opportunities, to work abroad on bigger projects and bigger budgets. I’m ready to explore new things and new markets,” Royo told Variety.
Story continues
Royo has yet to announce projects he has in development but one of his largest assets is ambition.
“One of the best experiences of my life as a writer,” said Royo, was also his biggest production to date, co-showrunning “Hernán” with Mexico’s Julian de Tavira. Produced and financed by Mexico’s Dopamine, a Salinas Group unit, in collaboration with Spain’s Onza Entertainment, the historical epic was talked up when made as the most expensive independent Hispanic series ever.
World premiering in November 2019 as an Amazon Prime Video exclusive, it was aired days later on Azteca 7 in Mexico and The History Channel Latin America.
“It was a wonderful ensemble,” said Royo of the multi-platform distribution, talent mix and structure of “Hernán,” who comes in at the polemical conquistador Cortés from eight different POVs, including his own.
“After the success of ‘Money Heist,’ we are ready to show to the world that we can produce shows with state of the art ambitions we could handle any budget, any production we want to here in Spain. Now we are producing for the whole world and we could go much bigger,” Royo told Variety.
As Latin America builds as one of the fastest growing streaming markets in the world and Mexico its center, Royo seems to know everyone in its industry. He’s also highly enthusiastic about working there. “As a friend of mine says, ‘Mexico is not a country, it’s a continent.’ And it’s wonderful. I love the food. I love the people.”
Royo was part of a first TV revolution as private-sector broadcasters launched in Spain in the 1990s, cutting his teeth in part on genre movies such as 2000’s “The Art of Dying,” produced by then Madrid-based Francisco Ramos, now Netflix vice president of Latin American content, who was attempting to bring a market-attuned edge to Spanish cinema.
A scriptwriter on iconic series which helped blow U.S. scripted out of Spanish primetime – 1995’s “Family Doctor,” 1998’s “Periodistas” – before taking on the longest writing gig of his career, 11 years from 2006-17 on “Remember When” (“Cuentame Cómo Pasó”), a warm, retro “Wonder Years”-style portrait of a Spanish from the first hints of modernisation in 1968 – in the first episode the Alcantaras buy a television – through to democracy in 1977 and through into the 199os.
Here, Royo’s love of history shines through. One of his favorite writing experiences in a 25 year career was the eighth season of “Remember When,” set over 1974-75 in Spain where mother Mercedes suffers breast cancer and has a mastectomy.
“We got in touch with doctors, now retired, who related the massive operations they’d had to perform on women in the ’70s. It was like carnage, and we talked to the women who survived those processes and listened to stories they told.
Royo’s favorite episodes in “Hernán” are the first and fifth. The series hits the ground running with Cortés, already installed in the Aztec capital rushing back to the coast to confront troops sent by his arch enemy, the Governor of Cuba, to arrest him. In a few brush strokes, Royo nails the essence of Cortés – his legalistic mind, his loyalty to friends, his strategy of seducing part of the Aztec Empire to battle against its overlords – without ever breaking the momentum of action.
In Episode Five, Moctezuma is dying and feels feels abandoned by his gods. Cortés wants to save him from hell. “They are enemies but they are like two friends who really care one for each other. I love that story. I love those characters,” Royo says.
It is this gift for sophisticated mainstream entertainment which should stand him good stead in an exciting future.

GLAAD Media Awards: Lil Nas X, ‘Eternals,’ ‘Sex Education’ and ‘Yellowjackets’ Among Nominees
]
The competition is set for the 33rd annual GLAAD Media Awards. The full roster of nominees — 246 across 30 categories (26 English and four Spanish-language) — were revealed today on TikTok by RuPaul’s Drag Race finalist Gottmik.
The awards, created to “honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues,” will be doled out during a pair of ceremonies, first in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton on April 2, and later in New York at the Hilton Midtown on May 6. The awards are presented by Gilead Sciences and Ketel One Family Made Vodka.
More from The Hollywood Reporter
The list includes two new categories: outstanding new TV series and outstanding graphic novel/anthology. Also revealed today: GLAAD’s Barbara Gittings Award for Excellence in LGBTQ Media will go to Franco Stevens, a pioneering lesbian journalist and founding publisher of Curve Magazine. Stevens was recently featured in the Starz documentary Ahead of the Curve.
“Media can create positive change and this year’s nominees represent powerful projects, stories and creators that positively shifted culture and enlightened audiences with new and impactful LGBTQ stories,” said GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “There are more nominees this year than ever before, highlighting a growing landscape of LGBTQ visibility, and serving as a reminder of the critical role that film, television, music, journalism, and other forms of media can play in growing LGBTQ acceptance in the face of ongoing attacks against our community.”
