Coachella 2022 festival lineup: 5 big takeaways
]
The lineup for the 2022 edition of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival finally arrived late Wednesday, though its headliners — Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, Billie Eilish, and Harry Styles — had leaked in the days and hours before.
And perhaps more than any pre-pandemic year, it’s a tricky lineup to assess.
There are a good number of returnees from the 2020 lineup that was not to be, 21 Savage, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Hot Chip among them, though that year’s headliners — Rage Against the Machine, Travis Scott, and Frank Ocean — are absent.
And while 2019, the last Coachella we had, featured a worldly and diverse mix of acts — BLACKPINK from South Korea, J Balvin from Colombia, Burna Boy from Nigeria —Coachella has continued its global reach, with Asian acts especially well represented.
So while there’s much more research to be done — some of these artists weren’t on anyone’s Coachella radar two years ago, after all — we’ll take our first pass at running the lineup through our ought-to-be-patented InstantLineupAnalyzer and see what five themes for 2022 our trusty machine spits out.

- Pop rocks: Billie Eilish is cool pop. Harry Styles is pop rock. And Carly Rae Jepsen, well, she’s my queen. Pop traditionally meant fluffier stuff, songs and artists who sold a ton of records. But here we’ll make the case that it’s simply music with irresistible melodies, smartly crafted, and aimed straight at the heart of its listeners.
Some of it rocks a lot: if you’ve seen a Harry Styles show you know how much he loves ’70s rock, and Phoebe Bridgers does more singer-songwriter kind of lower-volume rock.
Some is introspective: Japanese Breakfast writes beautiful songs that make strong emotional connections. Others, like Doja Cat, whose spot in the lineup is much higher now than it was in 2020, come from a hip-hop aspect.
If it’s a song you wanna sing along to, and it moves your heart, it doesn’t matter how much it sells, we’re calling it pop.
- The 88rising effect: Like in 2020, the 88rising music company gets special billing on the 2022 Coachella lineup poster, with a tagline at the bottom pledging Head In The Clouds Forever, a shoutout to its festival which 88rising in general champions Asian and Asian American artists.
Scattered across the lineup are names that just played the third Head In The Clouds festival in Pasadena a few months ago: Niki, Rich Brian, Joji, Beabadoobee and Japanese Breakfast among them.
But the diversity of the lineup goes beyond that one company and festival. Japan’s Kyary Pamyu Pamyu returns from 2020’s lineup, and the heavy metal Mongolians the Hu are back, too.
- Rock or pebbles: If a time traveler from Coachella 2005 happened on this lineup they wouldn’t know what to make of the rock bands on the poster, or lack thereof. This isn’t a new trend by far, but with Rage Against the Machine dropping out of a headlining spot it feels more obvious this year.
You do still have some fine choices though. The British-Irish band Idles is a terrific post punk band. The English electronic rock band Spiritualized will float you off to some distant, groovy cloud. Australia’s King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard traffic in psychedelia. I’m looking forward to Måneskin, the Italian hard rockers who won the most recent Eurovision Song Contest.
-
Rap still rules: With the former Kanye West headlining again this year, rap has a prestige spot on the lineup. But the undercard is solid too: 21 Savage, Megan Thee Stallion, Run The Jewels, Brockhampton and Lil Baby are guaranteed to draw huge crowds.
-
Fresh faces and oddballs: Every Coachella has a good portion of acts that you kinda-really-wanna-got-to-catch. They might be rising stars like Yola or Caroline Polachek or elder statesmen like Fatboy Slim and Richie Hawtin.
Others might not fit neatly into any mold: Danny Elfman is both an acclaimed film composer and the leader of beloved and defunct band Oingo Boingo. What he does at Coachella will pull one of the widest age ranges of any set.
Orville Peck is the fringe-masked Canadian country singer — I’m there for that. The Avalanches were fantastic last time they played the desert — I’ll be back for them.
More than 60% of Coachella 2022’s artists were on the lineup for the 2020 festival
]
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival announced the lineup for the 2022 edition on Wednesday Jan. 12, and new acts were added, a substantial number of artists stayed on board from the Coachella 2020 poster.
With the 2020 festival’s postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic, some changes to the lineup were to be expected.

The most notable differences are the headliners: Rage Against the Machine, Travis Scott and Frank Ocean were booked for 2020. Instead, Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and Ye (formerly Kanye West) will top the festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio April 15-17 and April 22-24. There’s also the addition of Swedish House Mafia, which isn’t yet billed for any particular day on the 2022 poster.
Of the 178 artists announced for this year, 107, or just over 60%, were on the 2020 Coachella poster. The 2020 poster listed 175 artists. (Note: While 88rising was listed below the lineup’s individual days on the both 2020 and 2022 posters, we’re not counting that in the total for both years because 88rising’s individual artists are represented elsewhere on the poster.)
Some of the biggest names returning include Megan Thee Stallion, Run the Jewels, Doja Cat, Carly Rae Jepsen, Danny Elfman, Disclosure, Joji and Madeon.
However, there were also some other notable names from 2020 conspicuously missing from the 2022 poster, including Calvin Harris, Charli XCX, Lana Del Rey, DaBaby, FKA Twigs, Lil Nas X, Lil Uzi Vert and Rex Orange County.
On the visual arts side, it appears that the lineup is the same as 2020, with installations from Architensions, Do Lab, Newsubstance , Cristopher Cichocki, Kiki van Eijk, Los Dos, Estudio Normal, Robert Bose and Oana Stanescu.

Coachella 2022 lineup announced: Festival includes Harry Styles, Kanye West and Billie Eilish
]
The lineup of the 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will include headliners Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and Ye (the artist formerly known as Kanye West), festival organizers announced Wednesday evening.
The festival, which is planned for April 15-17 and April 22-24 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Other notable names on the lineup include a reunion of EDM supergroup Swedish House Mafia, Megan Thee Stallion, Disclosure, Danny Elfman, Louis the Child, Doja Cat, Stromae, Giveon, Anitta and more.
The event also includes 88Rising’s Head in the Clouds Forever. Goldenvoice produced 88Rising’s expanded Head in the Clouds festival featuring Asian artists in Pasadena in November.
The beloved Do Lab will also be back.
Promoter Goldenvoice put pre-sale passes for Coachella 2022 on sale in June. They sold out within hours and fans could join a waitlist for three-day passes, which were priced at $449-$499 plus fees for general admission and $929-$1,049 plus fees for VIP. Weekend 1 is sold out but sales for remaining Weekend 2 tickets begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14. Prices have gone up to $549 for a general admission pass, $633 for a general admission pass with shuttle access and $1,119 for a VIP pass. Those prices do not include fees.

The original Coachella 2020 lineup included a reunited Rage Against the Machine topping the bill along with Frank Ocean and Travis Scott. In media reports from 2021, Goldenvoice’s Paul Tollett said that Ocean would not appear in 2022 but return in 2023. Rapper Scott is facing multiple lawsuits after 10 people died at his Astroworld festival in Houston in November 2021.
Eilish was the breakout star of the festival in 2019, when she performed to an overflowing crowd at the Outdoor Theatre stage. West, who recently changed his name to Ye and performed a show at the L.A. Coliseum, headlined the festival in 2011. However, he appeared at the second weekend of Coachella 2019 in the festival’s campgrounds with his star-studded “Sunday Service” religious revue on Easter Sunday.
Coachella started in 1999 at the Indio venue and the 2022 festival will be the event’s 21st edition. It attracts 125,000 people each weekend and traditionally kicks off festival season in the U.S. In October, Goldenvoice announced that it had inked a deal for year-round control of the Empire Polo Club. Coachella’s sister event, the Stagecoach Country Music Festival, which was also canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, will follow Coachella’s twin weekends and return April 29-May 1.
Due to the dust and winds in Indio, masks were not an uncommon sight at Coachella before the pandemic, and the festival’s website suggests face coverings “to protect against desert dust.” Last August, Goldenvoice’s parent company AEG Presents had announced that proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 would be required for admission into its events but that rule has since been amended for its large outdoor festivals. As of early Wednesday, Jan. 12, Coachella’s website still cites the change being due to “seeing first-hand the low transmission data and successful implementation of safety protocols at our festivals recently, alongside the rising vaccination rate of eligible Americans.” That language was removed by Wednesday evening, but it said that the current policy is that attendees must provide proof of full vaccination or a negative test taken within 72 hours of the event.
Coachella and Stagecoach were scheduled to take place over three weekends in April 2020 but were canceled by the order of Riverside County’s Public Health Officer due to concerns over the spread of the coronavirus a month before the events. Then, the festivals moved to October 2020, but the county pulled the plug in June 2020 because of concerns of another wave.
Later set for April 2021, Riverside County signed the order to cancel Coachella and Stagecoach for a third time last January amid the deadly winter surge.
With the rise of the omicron variant in recent weeks, other events have altered or canceled their in-person festivities due to the pandemic. The Grammy Awards, which were set for Crypto.com arena Jan. 31, have been postponed and a new date has not yet been announced. In the Coachella Valley, the Palm Springs International Film Festival canceled its gala and in-person screenings for 2022.

Coachella 2022 lineup doesn’t include Travis Scott after Astroworld tragedy
]
The 2022 Coachella lineup has been officially announced and it seems Travis Scott has been left out of this year’s show after the Astroworld Festival tragedy has called the artist’s behavior at concerts into question.
On Wednesday, the annual music festival revealed the dozens of headliners and performers who will be in attendance at the 2022 show with Ye, Billie Eilish and Harry Styles headlining six different nights spread across two weekends.
Completely absent from the list of performers is embattled rapper Scott, who Variety reports was originally on the bill but dropped in the wake of the Houston, Tx. concert event that left ten people dead and hundreds more injured. The outlet reported in December that Scott’s representatives were told he would no longer be headlining the festival and agreed to pay a “kill fee” for the cancellation, which is estimated to be 25% of his total. However, that has not been confirmed by organizers.
Scott was reportedly hoping to make Coachella his grand return to the stage following the Astroworld Festival tragedy.
TRAVIS SCOTT HIT WITH LAWSUIT BY FAMILY OF 14-YEAR-OLD KILLED AT ASTROWORLD
Neither representatives for Scott nor Coachella immediately responded to Fox News’ request for comment.
When Scott took the stage to close out the 2021 Astroworld Music Festival, the crowd was already densely packed with fans looking to get a glimpse of the headlining performer. Many of them sneaked into the venue throughout the day. Authorities have said 50,000 people attended the event in Houston, Texas. Over 300 people were treated at an on-site field hospital at NRG Park, and at least 13 were later hospitalized after the crowd reportedly surged forward.
Scott has faced criticism for not stopping the show, but has claimed multiple times that he was unaware of how dire the situation was in the crowd from his vantage point on the stage and only learned of how bad things got after his set had already concluded.

Regardless of the fallout from the Astroworld Festival, the 2022 Coachella is expected to take place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif. for two weekends set for April 15 – 17 and April 22 – 24, 2022.
