Variety reports that Timothy Olyphant will once again play his iconic role of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in Justified: City Primeval, a limited series which follows Givens on a new case that takes him to Detroit in search of an escaped sociopath.

Justified premiered on FX in 2010 and ran for six seasons. The series, which was an adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s short story ‘Fire in the Hole’, followed Olyphant’s Givens as he was reassigned back to his hometown of Harlan County where he continuously pursued notorious criminal Boyd Crowder, played by Walter Goggins, an old friend from his youth, among other criminals, drug gangs and crime families. The series was a hit with Olyphant earning much praise as well as an Emmy nomination for Best Actor while Goggins was also nominated several times for his portrayal of Crowder. Olyphant and Goggins’ chemistry as Givens and Crowder has been such a source of praise that we named them among the best arch-enemies of all time. Margo Martindale won an Emmy for her guest role in the series’ second season while Jeremy Davies won for his guest role in the third.

Justified: City Primeval will be based on Leonard’s book City Primeval and follows “Givens eight years after he left Kentucky behind. He now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 14-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind. A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who’s already slipped through the fingers of Detroit’s finest once and aims to do so again. Mansell’s lawyer, formidable Motor City native Carolyn Wilder, has every intention of representing her client, even as she finds herself caught in between cop and criminal, with her own game afoot as well.”

Justified: City Primeval will be showrun, written and executive produced by Dave Andron and Michael Dinner, the latter of whom will also direct. Olyphant will executive produce alongside Justified creator Graham Yost with Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly and Peter Leonard. Executive producers Taylor Elmore and Chris Provenzano will also write the series with Andron, Dinner, W.J. Boyd, Eisa Davis and Ingrid Escajeda. The new series will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and FX Productions with Walter Mosley hired as a consulting producer.

“Justified was one of the most critically acclaimed shows of the past decade and an adaption of Elmore Leonard’s work that was so colorfully brought to life by Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens, Graham Yost and the entire team of producers, writers, directors and cast,” said Eric Schrier, president of FX Entertainment. “To have this group come together again with Tim as Raylan in a new and different Elmore Leonard story is thrilling. I want to thank our showrunners Dave and Michael, and their fellow executive producers Tim, Graham, Sarah and Carl, the Elmore Leonard estate as well as our partners at Sony Pictures Television, for making this possible.”

“When Justified concluded, the love and affection for this exceptional series only grew and left audiences craving more Raylan Givens,” said Sony Pictures Television co-presidents Jeff Frost and Jason Clodfelter. “The iconic Elmore Leonard was one of the premier authors of our time and no one has quite captured his tone and authenticity as well as this Justified team. We look forward to experiencing the magic again of Tim, Graham, Dave, Michael and our preeminent executive producer team. We are so thrilled to be continuing this remarkable ride with our partners at FX.”

Timothy Olyphant to return in new ‘Justified’ limited series

Washington [US], January 14 (ANI): Hollywood actor Timothy Olyphant is all set to return as US Marshal Raylan Givens in a new ‘Justified’ limited series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, confirming last year’s reports of a possible revival, FX announced on Friday a new show titled ‘Justified: City Primeval’. The story will be inspired by Elmore Leonard’s novel ‘City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit’.

The show’s storyline reads, “Having left the hollers of Kentucky eight years ago, Raylan Givens now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 14-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind. A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit.”

“There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who’s already slipped through the fingers of Detroit’s finest once and aims to do so again. Mansell’s lawyer, formidable Motor City native Carolyn Wilder, has every intention of representing her client, even as she finds herself caught in between cop and criminal, with her own game afoot as well. These three characters set out on a collision course in classic Elmore Leonard fashion, to see who makes it out of the City Primeval alive,” it continues.

Regrading the series, Eric Schrier, president, FX Entertainment, said, “Justified was one of the most critically acclaimed shows of the past decade and an adaption of Elmore Leonard’s work that was so colorfully brought to life by Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens, Graham Yost and the entire team of producers, writers, directors and cast.”

He added, “To have this group come together again with Tim as Raylan in a new and different Elmore Leonard story is thrilling.”

Justified ran for six seasons on FX from 2010-2015 and was nominated for eight Emmy Awards, received two, and also won a Peabody Award. The series was based on Leonard’s novella, ‘Fire in the Hole’, with Leonard consulting with the producers until his death in 2013.

Dave Andron and Michael Dinner are showrunners and executive producers of the limited series, with Dinner directing. Olyphant will star and executive produce.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Graham Yost, who was the show’s original showrunner, Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly are executive producers, alongside Peter Leonard, Taylor Elmore and Chris Provenzano. The series will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and FX Productions. (ANI)

Bullet Points: More ‘Justified’ and ‘Quantum Leap,’ Plus Tim Allen’s ‘The Santa Claus

By Dustin Rowles | TV | January 14, 2022 |

— In what can only be described as fantastic news, FX is bringing back Justified for a limited series based on Elmore Leonard’s novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit. Yes, Raylan Givens will be back, and Timothy Olyphant will reprise the role. Will Walton Goggins make a return? That’s unclear. So is the fate of Tim, Rachel, and Wynn Duffy in the limited series project. We will take what we can get.

— Meanwhile, NBC has finally figured out how to bring back Quantum Leap, the much-beloved sci-fi series starring Scott Bakula that ran from 1989 to 1993. The reboot will focus on a new team restarting the project 30 years after Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. It’s unclear how involved Bakula will be in the project. All of that is the good news. The not-so-good news, potentially, is that Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt will run the show. They are the showrunners behind … La Brea. It’s also worth noting that times have changed, and there are a LOT of scenarios in the original series that would not fly today. It’ll be interesting to see how they work around that.

— What the good Lord gives, the devil takes away, which is why Disney+ has also announced that a series based on Tim Allen’s The Santa Claus movie has been given the green light. Tim Allen will return. In the series, Santa Claus is getting on up there in age and has decided to retire. First, however, he has to find a suitable replacement to take over his duties as Kris Kringle.

— After one The Walking Dead spin-off, The World Beyond, ended its run late last year, AMC has started production in Georgia on the newest one, Tales of The Walking Dead, an anthology series set in the universe of The Walking Dead.

— This is a fun idea, but it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out. Netflix is producing a comedy series called Murderville with Will Arnett in the lead role as Senior Detective Terry Seattle. It’s a scripted murder mystery, except that the celebrity guest stars — Annie Murphy, Conan O’Brien, Ken Jeong, Kumail Nanjiani, Marshawn Lynch, and Sharon Stone — won’t be given a script and will have to improvise their way through the episode and solve the murder.

— Denzel Washington managed to make it through most of his career before doing a sequel until Equalizer 2. Now he’s set to return in Equalizer 3. The script has already been written, and Denzel is getting in shape to reprise the role soon.

— Shonda Rhimes’ new Netflix series stars Anna Chlumsky, Laverne Cox, and Julia Garner. It’s called Inventing Anna, it comes out next month, and here is the trailer:

— Finally, here’s a bizarre lawsuit. Todd Murphy owns the trademark for the God Helmet. It is advertised as a device that “subtly stimulates the temporal lobes with magnetic signals to create altered states of mind; simulating a religious experience.” The fantastic Paramount+ series Evil recently featured their own version of the God Helmet on an episode of the series, and now Todd Murphy is suing Evil for misrepresenting the device.

‘Parenthood,’ ‘Justified’ Reunions Set for 2022 ATX TV Festival

The Braverman family will get back together at the 2022 ATX TV Festival.

The 11th edition of the festival, set for June 2-5 in Austin, will feature a reunion of the Parenthood cast — one that had initially been planned for 2020 but was put off by the pandemic. The ATX Festival went online only in each of the past two seasons but is planning to return to in-person events this year.

Also on tap for the 2022 festival is a panel featuring the Justified creative team, who will have a conversation about their collaborative process in making the critically acclaimed FX series and the creative partnerships that resulted from it. That reunion had also been slated for 2020 before being pushed back.

The Parenthood reunion, which comes 12 years after the series’ NBC debut, will feature cast members Dax Shepard, Erika Christensen, Joy Bryant, Mae Whitman and Craig T. Nelson along with series creator and showrunner Jason Katims, writer/executive producer David Hudgins (who’s also an ATX TV advisory board member) and director/exec producer Lawrence Trilling. Additional participants will be announced later.

The Justified creative panel features creator (and ATX board member) Graham Yost, executive producers Michael Dinner and Sarah Timberman and writer/producers Taylor Elmore, Fred Golan, Dave Andron, Chris Provenzano, Benjamin Cavell, Gary Lennon, Ingrid Escajeda, VJ Boyd and Wendy Calhoun.

Festival badges are on sale now, and virtual passes will go on sale closer to the event and allow remote access to some programming.
