‘SNL’: Will Forte, Kate McKinnon send up gaslighting in ‘Cinema Classics’ parody

Will Forte and Kate McKinnon merge comedy and psychology in a vintage “SNL” spoof that explores the origin of gaslighting.
In a parody of the PBS series “Film Classics,” Forte and McKinnon star as a bickering married couple in a black-and-white sendup of the 1944 Ingrid Bergman movie “Gaslight,” with Forte relentlessly deceiving McKinnon. Forte drives McKinnon to the edge of insanity by “slowly dimming the gas-fueled lights around her and then denying it.”
“Cinema Classics” host Reese De’What, played by Kenan Thompson, tells the audience that the definition of gaslighting, which is to “manipulate someone into believing a false reality,” is taken from this film.
“I have tried so hard to keep the fact that you have lost your mind a secret, but now I’m afraid all of London knows it,” Forte tells an anguished McKinnon.

In one last attempt to maintain her grasp on reality, McKinnon asks her husband of a week-and-half to turn up the lights “as high as they’ll go.” Forte does the exact opposite, turning the lights off altogether.
“That was up? Because to me that seemed like not up,” McKinnon says in bewilderment, to which Forte replies, “I hope you’re happy. Our gas bill is going to be insane, just like your brain.”
In addition to telling his wife that a book she holds in her hands is a rat and that a potato with googly eyes is her puppy, Forte tries to convince McKinnon a pineapple is a steak dinner.
“Dude, I don’t care how crazy I am: This is a pineapple,” McKinnon says. “I feel like maybe you’re trying to drive me mad.”

As McKinnon begins to realize that Forte may not be being honest with her, she snaps at him and the emotional isolation she feels in their relationship. “I don’t feel love,” she says to Forte. “You don’t even kiss me anymore.”
Forte tries to soothe McKinnon with a tender kiss, only to peel away and kiss their 18-year-old maid at the last second. This deception pushes McKinnon over the edge and helps her see the reality of her husband’s deception. McKinnon then unsuccessfully tries to turn the tables on Forte.
“That’s not a tie you’re wearing – it’s a steak,” McKinnon says, to which Forte replies, “Grow up.”
“I guess I’m bad at it," McKinnon says. “Well, at least I know the truth now.”

I ran across this tweet last week from venture capitalist Balaji Srinivasan: “Suppose there is a principle. The principle is good, but the proponents are bad. While quoting it endlessly, they distort the principle beyond recognition. In response, the opposition now opposes the principle even in principle. What’s a good term for this common phenomenon?”
I would call it a gaslighting feedback-loop. Gaslighting is a colloquialism that was made popular by the movie “Gaslight” (1944), in which a husband schemes to make his wife think she’s crazy with a series of lies and dirty tricks so he can get her committed to an asylum and steal her money.
Mr. Srinivasan has indeed outlined a common phenomenon in today’s media-soaked culture and politics. So I wondered whether I could find an appropriate cartoon in my archives to illustrate the principle.
It didn’t take long. My April 28, 2019, Palm Beach Daily News cartoon about an open-carry activist, disingenuously posing as a fisherman so he could legally parade around public streets with an arsenal, fills the bill.
The root issue behind the cartoon is the Second Amendment that gives Americans the right to bear arms. Many Americans hunt, target-shoot and own guns for security and personal protection. We quibble about some of the risks involved, but most Americans acknowledge and respect the Constitutional right.
Despite this, right-wing politicians and gun lobbyists have gaslighted for decades about the Second Amendment being in danger of repeal, and equated the prospect of tightening regulations with government tyranny and loss of freedom. Fear-mongering rhetoric, such as “they’re coming for your guns” escalates every time there’s a public outcry after a mass shooting.
Gun rights activists also frequently insist that tighter regulations would unfairly punish good people for what bad people do, and respond with “only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun.” Though simplistic and illogical, this grievance has become the rationale for state legislatures proposing radical laws to arm teachers in the classroom and to legalize open-carry possession in public.

Of course, you can’t have bifurcated politics without the other side becoming equally strident. Therefore, an increasing number of gun opponents call for banning all handguns or semi-automatic weapons or, yes, getting rid of guns altogether. As a result, you get heavily armed guys parading around because they think their Second Amendment rights are threatened.
In reality, not everyone has been sucked into this escalating feedback-loop of half-truths, fantasies and fallacies. Most Americans support the Second Amendment but also believe tighter firearms regulations and registration would be a good idea — including a lot of gun owners. Unfortunately, our gaslighting addiction has created a political chasm that apparently can’t be breeched.
The public’s gullibility to blatant distortions has tainted many issues and created a breeding ground for con artists in government. It’s time for Americans to recognize the danger of this dynamic and shut off the gas. After all, there are those who love to play with fire.

Angela Lansbury’s Best Movie And TV Roles
Dame Angela Lansbury has been a beloved presence in film, television, and theater for nearly eight decades. Although she’s best known as a benevolent, grandmotherly figure in many modern children’s movies and musicals, that doesn’t begin to encapsulate her range as an actress. Take a tour through her stage and screen credits and you’ll be surprised to find how many times she’s played villains, seductresses, and schemers.
Lansbury got her start in movies when she was just 19-years-old, playing a conniving maid in “Gaslight” (1944), for which she earned her first of three Oscar nominations as Best Supporting Actress. She competed again the very next year, having starred as the tragic love interest in “The Picture of Dorian Gray” (1945). A third Oscar bid followed for her chilling, iconic performance as the manipulative mother in “The Manchurian Candidate” (1962). Although she has never won a competitive prize, she was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2013.
Perhaps best remembered for playing mystery writer/amateur sleuth Jessica Fletcher on “Murder, She Wrote,” a top-rated series that inspired a hugely loyal following and ran for 12 seasons on CBS, Lansbury’s work on the show is still quite popular, inspiring memes and other internet culture — along with a theory she was the murderer all along. Lansbury earned 12 out of her 18 career Emmy nominations for the show, plus four Golden Globe wins (out of 10 nominations). She reprised the role in four TV movies after the series ended in 1996.
Younger fans got to know Lansbury as the voice of Mrs. Potts in Disney’s animated classic “Beauty and the Beast” (1991), 2005’s “Nanny McPhee” and the 2011 Jim Carrey children’s film “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.” Broadway aficionados know her best for her stage work, which includes Tony victories for “Mame” (1966), “Dear World” (1969), “Gypsy” (1975), “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (1979), and “Blithe Spirit” (2009). Either way, appreciation for Lansbury’s musical theater skills is multi-generational.

Be it lying, ultimatums , or other tactics intended to control or influence someone to achieve a certain outcome, it’s important to know how to identify different types of manipulative behavior so you can address them and set healthy boundaries for yourself and others.
“Manipulative behavior can be described as one person attempting to influence another’s emotions to produce a desired reaction or outcome,” explains Anisha Patel-Dunn, DO, therapist and family psychiatrist at LifeStance Health. While the definition is straightforward, manipulative behavior can camouflage itself as all sorts of interpersonal games. Generally speaking, however, “you are being manipulated when you feel you do not have autonomy, choice or ‘permission’ to set boundaries,” according to psychotherapist and psychoanalyst Babita Spinelli, LP.
To spot the many forms of manipulation IRL, we asked mental health experts what seemingly harmless actions are really red flags. Below are a few common types of manipulative behavior to be on the lookout for. Just remember: If someone you love is causing you mental or physical harm, consider seeking out the help of a professional. Your well-being is not up for negotiation.

- Gaslighting
The term “gaslighting” hails from the 1938 play, Gas Light by Patrick Hamilton that was turned into an iconic movie Gaslight (1944), in which a husband manipulates his wife until she believes she’s lost touch with reality. Unfortunately, this premise is still relevant today. “Gaslighting is a form of manipulation that takes place in relationships that are toxic,” Spinelli says. “It’s when the abusive individual dismisses the experience of the victim. The result would be that the victim would start to question their own reality.”
You can confront someone who’s gaslighting you using the following phrases Sarah Jane Crosby, a Dublin-based psychotherapist, previously shared with Well+Good.
“We remember things differently.”
“If you continue to speak to me like this I’m not engaging.”
“I hear you, and that isn’t my experience.”
“I am walking away from this conversation.”
“I am not interested in debating what happened with you.”
“I will speak to you about [A+B]. I’m not willing to speak to you about [C].”
- The silent treatment
In this scenario, the manipulator stops speaking to the other person because, yes, they are genuinely upset, says mental health counselor Leon Garber, LHMC; however, they use silence with the intent of maintaining power. “The victim is made to believe that they’ve done an egregious act that can only be forgiven through extensive efforts,” he explains.
Spinelli adds that giving someone the silent treatment doesn’t have to happen in person; digital communication is often fraught with manipulative behaviors. “Deliberately not responding to text messages or emails with the intention of making a person wait in order to elicit anxiety or maintain control is a huge sign of manipulation,” she says. So keep an eye out for intentional silence of all varieties.
That said, Dr. Patel-Dunn points out that sometimes people do need space to process before they can have a constructive conversation, so not all silence is a form of manipulation. The best way to determine what you’re dealing with is to ask. “If you find yourself on the receiving end of someone exhibiting the silent treatment, you can try setting clear boundaries and outlining your expectations. For example, say: ‘I understand that you’re upset, but I would like to discuss this when we’re both feeling up to it. I’m going to give you some space, and I’ll check back in with you later today to see if you’re up for a conversation.’”
- Guilt tripping
The intention of guilt tripping is to make the person you’re speaking to feel bad or ashamed so that they’ll modify their behavior to meet your expectation, explains Spinelli. “Guilt tripping can include reminding another about how much you’ve sacrificed for them, which is the form it usually takes; however, it can also include making another feel guilty about qualities and possessions the manipulator doesn’t have, like talent or a good reputation,” she says. “In this respect, the other party feels like they have to repay a debt.” Someone who’s making you feel like this is manipulating you . And even if they’re not necessarily realizing what they’re doing, it’s important to call it out when you see it, or remove yourself from the situation entirely.
- Flattery
Compliments are great and everything, but you know when you just feel like your flatterer is not being genuine? Our mental health experts say to go with your gut. “This manipulative strategy involves expressing the ways in which you believe the other is special and often includes exaggeration,” says Garber. So this could look like a friend that’s constantly complimenting you in OTT ways that make you uncomfortable. “An example would be: ‘You’ve helped me so much, and I can’t imagine what my life would be like without you,’” Garber says. “Since, we have a tendency to seek out positive, self-referential information, we can fall prey to flattery as a means of sustaining our self-esteem. The manipulator either knows they’re exaggerating or that their intent goes behind just providing a compliment.” They may, either consciously or unconsciously, be attempting to curry favor or keep you close to them by boosting up your ego (rather than really connecting with you).
This type of manipulation is fairly harmless, but can be annoying. So if you have someone in your life who’s consistently manipulating you in this way, consider sitting them down and starting the conversation with “When you do [X], it makes me feel [Y].”
- Love bombing
Grand urgent overtures of love in a blossoming relationship (aka love bombing) is a form of manipulation, says Spinelli. “It’s a strategic intent to manipulate the feelings of someone to fall quickly into the relationship,” she explains. While people tend to associate love bombs with the beginning of relationships, they can also happen as time goes on. For example, maybe they buy you expensive gifts or are extremely attentive after they’ve hurt your deeply in some way or crossed a boundary in an effort to get you to forgive them rather than addressing their behavior. Love bombing relationships are almost always irredeemable, so being able to spot the signs early can save you some heartache long-term.
